Iowa Cubs News Release

PAPILLION, NE - The Iowa Cubs (42-50) shut out the Omaha Storm Chasers (46-46) for the second straight game on Sunday night at Werner Park, taking home a 7-0 victory.

Unlike the previous contest, both lineups came out swinging. Omaha threatened first in the bottom of the first, knocking a one-out double and following it up with a single. The I-Cubs threw Michael Massey out at home, however, and managed to escape the inning without a run scoring.

Iowa's offense took advantage of their own opportunity in the next half inning. Matt Mervis led off the frame with a solo home run - his first at Triple-A - giving Iowa the first lead of the ballgame. They didn't stop there, using a single and an error to put two on ahead of Zach Davis, who drove in two with a double. Nick Madrigal added some insurance for the I-Cubs the next inning when he singled, moved to third on an error and a wild pitch, and scored on another single from Nelson Maldonado.

While Iowa kept adding on, Omaha was stumped by Matt Dermody. After the first inning, the lefty surrendered just two more singles, completing five scoreless innings. He struck out six batters and walked none, keeping the score at 4-0 in favor of the I-Cubs.

Anderson Espinoza took over for Iowa in the sixth inning, making his Triple-A debut. He recorded his first three outs on just eight pitches and faced the minimum in the seventh inning as well.

The score held at 4-0 until the eighth, when the I-Cubs sent eight men to the plate en route to three more runs. They used three singles, a walk, and a two-RBI triple from Mervis to increase their lead to 7-0. Espinoza completed his outing with a scoreless eighth and ninth, locking down the save and the second shutout win for Iowa.

POSTGAME NOTES:
