Hot Rods Game Notes

August 2, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

The Hot Rods are looking to avoid a sweep tonight, a game which also closes the final road trip to Dayton, OH in the 2019 regular season.

About Yesterday... The Hot Rods took on the Dayton Dragons in game three of the four-game set in Dayton. From, the beginning, the game had the look of a pitcher's duel, with neither team scoring in the first five innings, as both Shane Baz and Eduardo Salazar allowed just one hit apiece. In the sixth, though, Dayton used two singles and a walk to load the bases with two outs, which was followed by a wild pitch from Baz, scoring Mariel Bautista to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead. The Hot Rods immediately responded, though, in the seventh. With one out, Ruben Cardenas singled, then scored on a double from Grant Witherspoon. Two batters later, Roberto Alvarez followed with an RBI single, scoring Witherspoon to give Bowling Green the lead. Dayton immediately struck, though, against Nick Padilla. After two leadoff singles and sacrifice bunt, Michael Siani drove in the tying run on a fielder's choice. After the Hot Rods left the bases loaded in the eighth, the game proceeded into the ninth still tied. In the bottom of the ninth, Nate Scanlin singled with one out and came all the way around on a double by Bautista, giving the Dragons a 3-2 victory, their second-straight walk-off win and their third-straight victory to begin the series.

A Walk (Off) to Forget... For the second-straight night, the Hot Rods were on the wrong side of a walk-off, marking the first time since April 11-12, 2016 (at South Bend) that the Hot Rods have been walked off in back-to-back games. Thursday's loss was the sixth time this season that Bowling Green has been defeated in walk-off fashion, surpassing the five walk-off defeats suffered all of last year. Oddly enough, the walk-off losses for Bowling Green have all been bunched together. After suffering three walk-off losses in a span of six days from May 16-21 (two at Lake County, one at West Michigan), the other three have all occurred in the last five road games, with losses the last two nights, as well as a walk-off homer surrendered at Quad Cities on July 21 during the last road trip.

Road Woes... Throughout the season, Bowling Green Ballpark has been much kinder to the Hot Rods than the road has, but lately, the road has been even harsher on Bowling Green. After starting out the second half 6-2 away from home, the Hot Rods have dropped eight of their last ten in hostile territory going back to July 3, including five in a row dating back to July 21 in Quad Cities. The five-straight road defeats are the the most for Bowling Green since losing six-straight on the road from April 8-18, 2018. The Hot Rods now sit at 25-28 on the road this season, eighth in the Midwest League.

Transaction Time... Earlier today, the Hot Rods announced that right-hand pitcher Miller Hogan was reassigned back to Bowling Green and will be making the start tonight. In a corresponding move, LHP Michael Costanzo was reassigned to Short-Season Hudson Valley. Hogan was reassigned to Hudson Valley on July 26, but did not appear in a game for the Renegades. This year, Hogan has gone 2-3 with a 3.42 ERA in 15 games (five starts) for Bowling Green, while striking out 49 and walking just six over 50.0 innings since joining the Hot Rods on May 13.

Tradewinds Have Blown... With the end of July, the MLB trade deadline has also come and gone. While Wednesday's deadline saw no current Hot Rods change teams, four Bowling Green alums were dealt by the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday. Ryne Stanek (2014) and Jesus Sanchez (2017) headed to Miami in a deal. Additionally, Joe McCarthy (2017) was sent to San Francisco, while Jacob Faria (2014) went to Milwaukee. Earlier in the week, the Hot Rods were affected by a deal with Cleveland on Sunday, sending infielder Christian Arroyo and former Hot Rods pitcher Hunter Wood (2014-15) to the Indians. In exchange, the Rays received outfielder Ruben Cardenas, formerly of the Lake County Captains, who was added to the Bowling Green roster on Monday. Cardenas batted .284 in 84 games for Lake County, swatting ten home runs with 54 RBI and has a hit in each of his first three games in a Hot Rods uniform.

Yesterday's Notes... Proctor has a seven-game hitting streak...Proctor also had his 29th multi-hit game of the year... Cardenas has hit safely in each of his first three games with Bowling Green... Baz fell one out short of tying his career-high in innings pitched... He allowed three hits or less in a start for the sixth time this season... The Dragons walked off the Hot Rods for the second night in a row... BG is now 8-7 in the season series against Dayton... The Hot Rods are 19-20 in one-run games this year... They're now 25-28 on the road this season... BG is looking to avoid being swept for the fourth time this season on Friday... This was the first time this season the Hot Rods have lost their first game of a month...
