Loons Fall in Extras, Split Series

August 2, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release

MIDLAND, Mich. - After taking the first two games of the series against the Fort Wayne TinCaps, it looked like the Great Lakes Loons would cruise into the weekend and another road trip riding a winning streak. After a high-scoring affair one night ago, the Loons couldn't come up with any magic in extra innings as the TinCaps took the contest 3-1 in 10 innings to split the series at Dow Diamond on Friday night.

On a night when the bats never seemed to get going, the Loons had 2019 Los Angeles Dodgers 1st round pick Kody Hoese to thank for keeping them in the game. With just three hits as a team, one of them was Hoese's first home run with the Loons. It was a ball that just kept carrying out to left field before clanging off the railing just over the padded wall.

Hoese went on to have a two-hit night, while the only other hit for the Loons (66-41) batters was a double down the left field line by Chris Roller.

Most nights when you hold a team to just one run you expect to come out on top in regulation. The combination of Jack Little, Jose Chacin and Aaron Ochsenbein teamed up to allow one run on seven hits. With the deck stacked against him starting the 10th with a runner on second base, Jasiel Alvino (L, 3-2) surrendered the victorious runs.

Despite the loss, entering play on Friday the Loons had won 16 of their last 22 games with 11 of the 16 wins coming by three runs or less. During that stretch, the Loons led the Midwest league with 11 saves, Leonel Valera was hitting .319 with a .846 OPS, Chris Roller was hitting .297 with a .901 OPS, Jacon Amaya was hitting .279 with a .802 OPS, and Justin Bruihl had logged nine scoreless inning with 14 strikeouts.
