Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester,MN) - The Rochester Honkers picked up their first win of the second half of the season with a 6-1 win over the Willmar Stingers on Friday, July 12, at Mayo Field.
Kevin Barker (UC Davis) singled with one out in the bottom of the second inning and Jared Deacon (Cal State Fullerton) followed with a walk to set up a three-run homerun from Matt Halloran (Minnesota.) The homerun was Halloran's second of the season. Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) doubled to right field and Carter Burgess (Sam Houston State) drove a two-run homerun, his fourth of the season, to give the Honkers an early 5-0 lead.
Willmar got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning when Max Kuhn launched a homerun over the left field wall to start the inning.
Rochester answered with an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Max Murphy (Bradley) started the inning with an infield single, stole second base, and came around to score when Barker singled off of third base and into shallow left field to increase the lead to 6-1 after seven innings.
The five-run lead was more than enough support for Honkers starting pitcher Matt Kent (Texas A&M,) who allowed just one run on five hits, while striking out nine, in eight innings to earn the win (3-2.) Chris Kubitz took the loss (2-2) for the Stingers. He allowed five runs on five hits in 4.1 innings. Seth Fuller (Black Hawk College) pitched a perfect ninth inning in relief for the Honkers.
Hanawahine went 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored on the night. He also robbed Kuhn of his second homerun of the night to end the game.
Before the game, Kent and Burgess were announced to represent the Rochester Honkers in the 2013 Northwoods League All Star Game in Eau Claire, WI, on July 23 at 7:35 p.m. Kent is now 3-2 with a 2.25 ERA on the season. Burgess is leading the league with a .403 batting average and has four homeruns and 23 RBI on the season.
The two teams will finish up a two-game series on Saturday July 13 at 7:05 p.m. at Mayo Field. Logan Spitzack (St. Cloud State) is scheduled to make the start for the Honkers (1-8, 19-25.) Andrew Woeck (North Carolina State) is slated to start for the Stingers (3-5, 26-17.) Rochester will then head to Duluth for a two-game series beginning on Sunday July 14.
