Mallards Erase Seven-Run Deficit But Ultimately Fall 16-9

Madison, WI - The Madison Mallards (6-3, 27-15) found themselves down 7-0 after three and a half innings and tied the game at eight in the fifth but eventually fell by a score of 16-9 to the Wisconsin Woodchucks (6-3, 19-24) Thursday night.

The Woodchucks got to Mallards starter Nick Smith (Western Illinois) early and ended up with 21 hits in the slugfest. The Mallards racked up 16 on the night.

The Mallards chipped away at the early seven-run Woodchucks lead by scoring a pair in the third and another in the fourth before a five-run inning in the fifth that included a grand slam from Joe McCarthy (Virginia).

It was all Woodchucks after that, as they scored three more in the seventh, four more in the eighth and one more in the ninth while the Mallards added only one more in the eighth.

Smith was roughed up in his second start of the season. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits in just 2.2 innings of work. He walked one.

Sam Forkert (Marian) pitched the next 3.1 innings and allowed just one run (earned) on three hits and struck out four.

Kristian Calibuso (Eastern Michigan) and Shawn Hunter (Oklahoma State) also pitched for the Mallards. Calibuso allowed seven runs (all earned) on seven hits in 1.2 innings while Hunter allowed one run (earned) on two hits in 1.1 innings.

The Woodchucks No. 6, 7, 8 and 9 hitters finished a combined 14-for-17 with 10 RBIs. Left fielder Austin Diemer (Cal State Fullerton) hit for the cycle while Figueroa finished a home run away from the cycle.

Joe McCarthy (Virginia) led the way for the Mallards. He finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Brock Stewart (Illinois State), Jason Goldstein (Illinois) and John LaPrise (Virginia) all had three hits for the Mallards.

The Mallards will head to Mequon, Wisconsin tomorrow to finish a game that was suspended in the 16th inning on June 22nd and will play another game at 7:05 pm. They will continue the previously suspended game at 5:30 pm. The game was suspended because a City of Mequon ordinance states that an inning cannot begin past 11:00 pm. The game was tied at three after 16 innings.

They will play the Chinooks away from home on Saturday at 6:35 pm before concluding their series with Lakeshore on Sunday with a 5:05 pm game in Madison.
