Willmar Stingers News Release
WILLMAR, Minn. - For the first time this season the Willmar Stingers dropped consecutive games at home as the Waterloo Bucks put on an offensive showcase, racking up the most runs permitted by Willmar pitching all season. The Stinger offense returned to its productive ways, but could not do enough to offset Waterloo in a 20-7 loss.
Early in the game, however, the Stingers' offensive renaissance was evident. Trailing 3-0 after the Bucks batted in the top of the 1st inning, the Stingers managed to tie the game with a clutch, two-out home run by Max Kuhn. After a Michael Suchy single and a Marc Flores walk, Kuhn stepped to the plate and sent a ball over the left field fence. The home run was the third of the season for Kuhn (Kentucky), giving him 31 RBI on the season and earning him the honors of being CDI player of the game.
The Stingers then came to bat in the home half of the 3rd inning trailing 4-3, but managed to take the lead away from Waterloo starting pitcher Grant Borne. Zack Tillery and Florida Gulf Coast University teammate Suchy each reached base to begin the frame. Then, following a walk of Flores (Hawaii) to load the bases, Nick Halamandaris was hit by a pitch that tied the game 4-4. With two outs recorded in the innings, Kyle Perry came up with a big 2-RBI base hit to put the Stingers ahead, 6-4.
Unfortunately, the Stingers offense went dormant as the Bucks exploded over the middle innings, eventually putting the game out of reach as the Stingers were forced to use seven pitchers on the game.
Next, the Stingers take a two-game road trip to visit the Rochester Honkers. The Honkers are winless in the second half and are just 4-1 against Willmar on the season. For Friday's game, manager Matt Hollod will turn to lefty Chris Kubitz (St. Cloud State) to stem the tide. Kubitz boasts a 2-1 record on the season with a respectable 4.79 ERA.
