Mankato, Minn. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors ended their five-game losing streak with a victory over the Mankato MoonDogsThursday night at Franklin Rogers Park by a score of 5-2. The Anchors improved their second-half record to 2-5 and 12-29 in 2013.

In the top of the third, Alexandria was first on the board against Julian Esquibel. Kris Goodman walked and Andrew Sohn followed with a single. With one out, Goodman and Sohn completed a double steal and a groundout by Michael Barash scored Goodman putting the Anchors up 1-0.

The Blue Anchors added onto their lead with one out in the fifth. Tim Cusick was hit by a pitch and came around to score when Barash doubled into right-center field, making the score 2-0.

The offense added on for Alexandria in the sixth. Keegan Dale hit a one-out single, stole second and went to third on a throwing error by the catcher Matt Jones. Georgie Salem hit a sacrifice fly to left field, giving the Blue Anchors a 3-0 advantage.

The MoonDogs finally got to Hunter Neman in the bottom of the sixth. Zach Zehner doubled to start the frame and after two pop outs, Quinnton Mack doubled down the left-field line to bringing home Zehner to cut Alexandria's lead to 3-1.

Against reliever Paul Mittura, the Blue Anchors got some insurance. Cusick drew a one-out walk and came around to score on a Barash homer, extending the lead to 5-1.

Mankato put together one last rally in the bottom of the ninth against Zac Custer. Krysthian Leal walked to start the inning and went to second on a two-out single by John Michael Twichell. Zehner singled to plate Leal, cutting the Blue Anchors lead to 5-2. Scott Sanderson came in to face Chase Simpson who grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.

Newman (1-2) picked up his first victory of the season going six innings allowing one run on five hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. Custer pitched 2.2 innings and gave up one run on four hits, a walk while striking out two. Sanderson got the save by retiring the only batter he faced.

Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Michael Barash (DH) - The LSU product had his best game of the season. In five trips to the plate, he had two hits, a homer and a double, to go along with four RBI.

Notes: Newman turned in his first quality start of the summer...Barash's four RBI is a season high...Goodman saw his seven-game hitting streak snapped...Tyler Curtis has reached safely in all five of his starts via hit or walk...The save was Sanderson's first of the season...The Blue Anchors travel to Waterloo for three games against the Bucks starting with a double header Friday...On the mound for game one is Kevin Hatcher (0-1, 3.60) and pitching game two is Eldon Evans (0-1, 36.00)...The games, starting at 6:35 p.m., can be seen live at www.youtube.com/user/NorthwoodsLeague.
