Mallards Look to Bounce Back From Blowout

July 12, 2013 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release

Mequon, WI - The Madison Mallards (6-3, 27-15) hope to rebound from a 16-9 drubbing at the hands of the Wisconsin Woodchucks Thursday night by squaring off against the division-leading Lakeshore Chinooks (7-1, 28-14).

The Mallards and Chinooks will continue a game that was previously suspended tonight at 5:05 pm. On June 22nd, the Mallards and Chinooks were tied after 16 innings, but a City of Mequon ordinance states than a new inning cannot begin after 11:00 pm.

The second game of the evening between the Mallards and Chinooks is scheduled for 7:05 pm.

The Woodchucks No. 6, 7, 8 and 9 hitters finished a combined 14-for-17 with 10 RBIs last night. The team totaled 21 hits on the night.

The Mallards found themselves down 7-0 early but dug their way back thanks to a fifth-inning grand slam off the bat of Joe McCarthy (Virginia) to tie things at 8. It was all Woodchucks after that, as they scored three more in the seventh, four more in the eighth and one more in the ninth while the Mallards added only one more in the eighth.

Ben Neumann (Northern Illinois) will continue the previously suspended game at 5:05 pm while Taylore Cherry (North Carolina) will get the start in game two.

Cherry will be making his third start tonight and is coming off of an appearance in which he allowed only five hits in 5.2 innings of work. He didn't receive a decision but allowed four runs (three earned) and walked six while striking out three.

Donnie Hissa (Notre Dame) will be making his third start of the season and second appearance against the Mallards tonight for the 7:05 pm game. He went two innings against the Mallards on June 11th and allowed an unearned run on three hits. He is just coming off of a complete game win against the Wisconsin Woodchucks in his last start on July 6th. He allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits while striking out 11 Woodchuck hitters.

Untouchable Chinooks

The Mallards lineup will have its hands full this weekend against the Chinooks. Over the last 10 games, the Chinooks pitching staff has only allowed 2.6 earned runs per game and is 9-1 in the process. They also lead the entire Northwoods League in ERA by 0.41 points, as their mark of 3.14 is ahead of second place Waterloo. The Mallards are fifth with a 3.95 ERA.
