Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

FISHKILL, NY - The only thing missing was apple pie. The first day of summer brought in a new era of Hudson Valley Renegades baseball. A picturesque Friday night was the setting for the team's home opener to celebrate its 20th season at Dutchess Stadium. In the end, 5,403 fans left happy as the 'Gades improved to 5-0 with a 5-3 victory over the division rival Staten Island Yankees. There were tense moments in the end, but first baseman John Alexander calmed the masses with three huge plays in the final two innings.

For the second straight night against Staten Island, a rookie took the hill to make his first pro start. Ben Griset looked good in three innings in the series opener as he passed the baton to Austin Pruitt. The Woodlands, Texas native was perfect in the first two innings while being provided with a short lead after a Granden Goetzman RBI single in the bottom of the second made it 1-0. The only adversity Griset faced came after two straight singles to begin the third, but he closed out the inning with a double play ball before getting another in the fourth.

Hudson Valley added two more runs in the third after singles by Darryl George and Julian Ridings. For the second straight night, Patrick Blair dropped down a sacrifice bunt which advanced the runners. An Ariel Soriano single and a Johnny Field RBI groundout brought them in to make it 3-0.

The 'Gades Aaron Griffin (1-0) worked a smooth night of long relief until the eighth inning, when he gave up one-out singles to Kale Sumner and Daniel Aldrich. Bubba Jones' double down the right field line cut the lead to 3-2, allowing Mr. Alexander to enter from stage right. John Murphy hit a grounder to Alexander, who sent a laser of a throw to third base to cut down Jones for the second out and crush the Yanks momentum.

In the bottom of the inning during a lengthy at bat against Andrew Benak, Alexander was still in an 0-2 hole after fouling off several pitches. With runners at second and third, he delivered a two-run single into left to give the 'Gades a 5-2 lead. With the Yankees up in the ninth and a runner at first after a leadoff single, Brandon Thomas scorched a line drive ticketed down the right field line. Alexander dove to his left and grabbed the line drive, falling on the bag to complete another double play. After a Yeicok Calderon home run trimmed the lead to 5-3, Derek Loera struck out Trent Garrison to pick up the save in his first pro appearance.
