Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

STATEN ISLAND, NY - So you're a 21-year-old kid from Shelby, NC who's watched his team roll off three straight wins in convincing fashion. Finally, the manager calls your number and you see your name at the top of the batting order. Easy, right? Not necessarily, especially not in your first game as a professional baseball player. Julian Ridings blocked all this out at Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Thursday night. As a matter of fact, he paced the Renegades right from the first pitch as part of a 4-for-5 night at the plate in a 6-0 victory over the Staten Island Yankees.

The Western Carolina University product broke the ice with a leadoff single off Yanks starter Rookie Davis. He then got the green light from manager Michael Johns and stole second rather handily before moving to third base on a wild pitch. Three batters later, a fellow rookie in his first at bat would bring him in as Johnny Field grounded out to short to make it 1-0.

Renegades starter Ben Griset scattered three hits across the first three innings with three strikeouts before being replaced by Eli Echarry. But Ridings made sure to help with more run support in the top of the third after picking up a single for the second straight at bat. A Patrick Blair sacrifice bunt moved him to second, which allowed Ariel Soriano to reach down and golf an RBI double down the left field line to score the 'Gades second run. In the fourth, Ridings brought in Omar Narvaez with a two-out RBI single. Are you starting to get the point?

Echarry was able to pitch into and out of trouble all night. After a couple of base hits in the fourth, he got an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play off the bat of catcher Isaias Tejeda. Later, with the bases loaded after three straight singles in the sixth, he got Tejeda to ground into a force out at the plate for the second out. The inning ended when Mikeson Oliberto flew out to left field on the first pitch of the at bat to keep the shutout intact.

The score held until the top of the ninth when the Renegades benefitted from a Yankees error. After a Blair single and a Soriano walk, Field hit a hard grounder to second baseman Hector Crespo, who misplayed the quick hop and deflected the ball into shallow right field. Blair scored no problem but Field got caught in a rundown between first and second, forcing a throw to the plate to get Soriano that would not be in time. Everyone was safe, and two more runs were in. The final run came on an Omar Narvaez sacrifice fly to score Field and put the cap on the 6-0 victory.
