Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- Jaycob Brugman's grand slam home run in the bottom of the sixth inning accounted for all of Vermont's runs on Friday night, but they were all the Lake Monsters would need in a 4-1 New York-Penn League victory at historic Centennial Field.

The Lake Monsters loaded the bases in the sixth on back-to-back two-out singles from Tyler Marincov and Luis Baez followed by a walk to Josh Miller. Brugman then lined the first pitch he saw from Tigers reliever Tanner Bailey over the rightfield fence for the grand slam homer. It was just the 12th grand slam in Lake Monsters history and the first since Michael Fabiaschi against Hudson Valley on August 21, 2011 at Centennial.

Before the grand slam, the Lake Monster bats had been quiet against Connecticut starter Joanthan Crawford and reliever Nick Carmichael. Crawford, a first-round pick in the 2013 draft out of the University of Florida, struckout three in two perfect innings and Carmichael did not allow a hit (but did walk three) in his 2 2/3 innings. Vermont did not have a base hit in the game until a two-out single from B.J. Boyd in the fifth.

Lake Monsters starter Brent Powers, who joined Vermont on Friday from the Single-A Beloit Snappers, allowed three hits and struckout six in four scoreless innings of work. A member of both the 2011 and 2012 Lake Monsters, Powers had two strikeouts in each of the first three innings and did not walk a batter.

Reliever Derek Hansen allowed an unearned run in the seventh on a run-scoring wild pitch that plated Jesus Ustariz with the Tigers only run of the game. Hansen (1-0) walked two and struckout two in 2 2/3 hitless innings for the win, while Omar Duran struckout five in 2 1/3 innings for his first save of the season. After allowing 26 runs in three losses at Tri-City to start the season, Vermont pitchers have allowed just two runs in the two wins over Connecticut.

The Lake Monsters will try and complete the three-game sweep of the Tigers on Saturday at Centennial Field beginning at 6:05 pm on TD Bank Night at the Ballpark. The homestand will continue with a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox affiliate Lowell Spinners Sunday through Tuesday.
