Callahan Continues Spinners Pitching Mastery

Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners jumped out to an early lead and it was more than enough for Jamie Callahan and the Spinners' bullpen who held the high-powered Tri-City ValleyCats offense to just two hits to hand them their first loss in a 4-0 win Friday night at LeLacheur Park.

For the third consecutive night, the Spinners got out to an early lead with a first inning run. Tzu-Wei Lin led off the game with an infield single, just beating the play at first base before using his speed to score on a double to deep center by Manuel Margot, giving the Spinners a 1-0 lead.

Lowell (3-1) would tack on a second run in the third inning, again using speed to their advantage. Carlos Asuaje led off the inning with his first professional hit, advancing to second on a wild pitch and taking third on a balk. Asuaje would then use his speed to come home on a sacrifice fly by Lin to shallow right field, putting the Spinners ahead, 2-0.

The Spinners would extend the lead in the fourth inning to 4-0. Kendrick Perkins, on Kendrick Perkins Poster Giveaway, led off the inning with a double. He moved to third on a single by Nick Moore and both would come around to score on double by Reed Gragnani to left-centerfield.

The offense was more than enough for Callahan, a 2012 2nd round draft pick, who was masterful in five innings in his New York-Penn League debut, as he baffled the ValleyCats. Throwing 44 of his 66 pitches for strikes, Callahan allowed just a two-out single up the middle in the top of the fifth, striking out three while walking two. Kyle Martin followed in his professional debut, throwing two scoreless, allowing one hit and two walks, striking out one. Greg Larson finished the win with two hitless innings, striking out three.

Spinners starting pitchers have now thrown 20 scoreless innings to start the season and the team has recorded two shutouts in their first four games.

Offensively, Lin led the way for the Spinner offense with two hits, a run scored and RBI, stealing his first base of the season. Margot, Perkins, Moore, Gragnani and Asuaje each added a hit in the Spinners seven hit attack.

Ty Buttrey looks to keep the Spinner starting rotation roll going when he gets the ball for a 6:05 first pitch Saturday night, up from the originally scheduled 7:05 start time to accommodate the Bruins game. There are rally towels for the first 1,000 fans courtesy of the Bedford VA Hospital and post-game fireworks once again.
