Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Still looking for the first 'W'
The Aberdeen IronBirds are still looking for their first win of the season after falling to the Brooklyn Cyclones, 3-0, in their first road contest of the season. RHP Austin Urban took the loss, going 4.1 innings, allowing six hits, three runs (only one earned), walking three and striking out four. The IronBirds finished the game with seven hits and had base runners in six different innings, but were unable to push a run across.
Piling up the strikeouts
Aberdeen pitchers added eight to their strikeout total, giving them 39 on the young season. They are tied at the top of the New York Penn League with the State College Spikes, who have also recorded 39 strikeouts.
Kris Richards had himself a ball game
IronBirds' infielder Kris Richards had a nice game last night. He recorded three hits, all singles, and had a couple nice plays defensively for Aberdeen. The three hits were the first three of the season for Richards, who also got his first start at second base last night, giving Jeff Kemp a night off.
On the mound tonight...
LHP Steve Brault will make his minor league debut this evening. Brault was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 11th round of the 2013 MLB draft. He played his college ball at Regis University. He was selected as a Third-team All-American and First Team All-Rocky Moluntain Athletic Conference for both pitcher and outfielder and was second on the team in ERA (2.63) and wins (8), throwing three complete games. The Cyclones will counter with RHP Jacob Lugo. Lugo missed all of 2012 with a lower back injury after spending 11 games with Kingsport in 2011. He was a34th round pick of the Mets in the 2011 draft.
Road trip continues
After tonight's game, the IronBirds and Cyclones will meet one more time tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. before the IronBirds travel 13 miles west to Richmond County Bank Ballpark to take on the Staten Island Yankees for three games beginning Sunday at 4:00 p.m. After three in Staten Island, the IronBirds will return home and play the Cyclones and Yankees over the course of a five game home stand.
