Scrappers Drop a Heartbreaker in the 9th

June 21, 2013 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

Batavia, NY- Claudio Bautista's monster night was not enough for the Scrappers, as they were unable to hold a 2-1 lead in the 9th inning. Carlos Lopez delivered a bloop single to leftfield to drive Avery Romero to the plate with the winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning.

Bautista, the hottest hitter in the Pickney Division, continued his torrid start to the 2013. He went 3-5 and finished just a triple shy of the cycle. In the top of the 5th inning, Bautista launched the Scrappers first homerun of the season, a mammoth blast to leftfield.

Cole Sulser made his first start for the Scrappers and was dominant for the first three innings. He began his professional career by striking out the first four batters of the game. He finished with five strikeouts on the night. Matt Whitehouse and Kerry Doane followed Sulser and were just as impressive. They combined to pitch five innings of three hit baseball, allowing just one run and striking out six.

Manuel Carmona came in for the ninth inning to try and close out the game for the Scrappers. Felix Munoz led of the inning with a walk. Munoz was lifted for pinch runner Luiz Ortiz. Ortiz was able to advance to third on a single by Avery Romero. A wild pitch allowed Ortiz to score the tying run and moved Romero to second. Lopez then followed with the bloop single to left to score Romero with the walk off run for the Muckdogs.

The Scrappers and Muckdogs will conclude their series on Saturday night, before returning home Sunday against Auburn. Call the Scrappers box office at 330-505-0000 to get your tickets.
