February 7, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID (2/6/13) - David deKastrozza scored twice and added two assists for a season-high four points Wednesday night as the Idaho Steelheads upended the Utah Grizzlies, 7-3, in front of 3,275 fans at Boise's CenturyLink Arena.
Sam Carrick and Matt Case also chipped in with three points apiece as Idaho improved to 29-12-5 (63 points) overall and 16-3-2 on home ice.
The scoring started early with a Case blast from the top of the right circle through traffic, beating Utah goaltender Shane Owen at 1:38 for his fifth goal of the season - a new career-high for Case - to make it 1-0. Utah would scramble back and tie it at 6:18 of the period when Berkley Scott knocked a loose puck into the Idaho cage to make it 1-1. The Steelheads took the lead for good at 15:23 of the first when Carrick carried the puck all the way from the left-hand corner, behind the net, and into the right-hand circle before spinning a forehand past Owen for his 12th of the season, making it 2-1 Steelheads.
Idaho struck early in the second on the power play when Ian Watters finished a Carrick centering pass just 22 seconds into the frame to make it 3-1 but, again, Utah would answer quickly on a Kory Falite goal just 33 seconds later at the 55-second mark of the second to make it 3-2. Before the fans could finish checking the score, Idaho struck again on a deKastrozza re-direction of a power-play point shot from Case at 1:20 of the second to re-establish the two-goal lead for Idaho at 4-2.
Later in the second, Idaho put the puck in the net again as Ken Trentowski got the puck up the left wall to Carrick. Carrick walked in virtually uncontested before snapping a quick forehand over Owen's glove at 11:34 of the frame to make it 5-2. Utah crept closer on a James Martin power-play goal late in the second, making it 5-3 Idaho after two.
Two quick goals from Idaho erased any doubt in the third. First, deKastrozza was on the receiving end of a long back-hand pass from Ben Ondrus over a Utah defenseman to spring a breakaway. deKastrozza buried his second of the night, 14th of the season, at 3:30 of the third to give Idaho some breathing room. Then, at 5:41, Justin Taylor scored his first goal as an Idaho Steelhead, knocking home a rebound off another Case outside shot to close out the scoring, making it 7-3.
James Isaacs (two assists) and Ian Watters (goal, assist) also added multi-point nights for Idaho along with deKastrozza, Carrick and Case. Case was plus-5 on the night, improving his ECHL-best plus/minus rating to plus-31. Isaacs post a career-best plus-4 rating.
Tyler Beskorowany picked up the win, stopping 25 of 28 shots including three dazzling leg-pad saves to keep Utah from getting any closer. Owen took the loss, allowing all seven Idaho goals on 32 shots. Idaho was 2-5 on the power play while stopping four of Utah's five power-play chances.
The same two teams will play again on Friday night in Boise on Higgins and Rutledge Bobblehead Doll giveaway night as fans will have a chance to pick up a "Blue the Bear" bobblehead doll at the doors.
