LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles defeated the Fort Wayne Komets, 2-1, in the first of three meetings between the teams this week at the Budweiser Events Center. Colorado continued its recent trend of heavily out-shooting its opponent -- registering a 38-24 advantage -- but was able to get just two pucks past Charlie Effinger.

Each team tossed 10 shots on net in the first frame, but the Eagles were the only team to find the back of the net. Joey Sides got the goal after forcing a turnover inside Colorado's offensive blue line, then he corralled the puck between the circles and got off a shot that got past the Komets' goalie at 14:30.

The teams traded tallies in the second stanza. The Komets tied the game at 1 five minutes into the period on a play that saw Eric Giosa chip the puck free in the right corner where John Dunbar picked it up before sending a pass into the slot where a streaking Thomas Beauregard slammed it home. But Isaac Smeltzer put the home team back on top at 16:23 when he scored on a wraparound.

The Eagles dominated the start of the third period, spending the first minute of the final frame in the Fort Wayne zone. But as the time ticked off the clock, the Komets' push strengthened, but they weren't able to get a tying goal past Brown.
