New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H.- K.C. Hobson went deep with two down in the ninth inning to put the Fisher Cats on the board after a long night as they fell to the Richmond Flying Squirrels (26-26) by a final of 12-1 Friday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
Cory Burns had a spectacular one-inning outing as he set a new personal best for 2015 in strikeouts. Burns struck out the side in the top of the eighth inning and didn't allow a hit. New Hampshire also spun three double plays on the night and stayed defensively sound.
The scoring began in the first inning for Richmond on an RBI groundout by Mac Williamson. In the second, Mitch Delfino doubled home Ricky Oropesa to make it a 2-0 lead. In the fifth frame, Williamson clubbed a two-run homer to put Richmond out in front 4-0.
Taylor Cole (2-4) allowed four runs in his five innings, notching five strikeouts and only walking one while surrendering eight hits. In the top of the sixth, Wil Browning came in to relieve Cole. Richmond struck for six runs against Browning (including back-to-back run-scoring doubles) before Danny Barnes was handed the ball. Barnes wasn't immune to Richmond's offense, as Engel Beltre blasted a two-run pinch-hit homer to extend the Flying Squirrels' lead to 12-0.
Tyler Beede (1-0) made his debut at the AA level for the Richmond Flying Squirrels after being called up recently and confused the Fisher Cats batters for seven complete innings. The Fisher Cats had three hits off of him all coming in the first inning.
Outfielder Matt Newman headed to the hill for a scoreless ninth inning to save the Fisher Cats' bullpen a bit of wear. It was his third appearance in the minor leagues as a pitcher, and he followed catcher Jack Murphy as the second position player this season to pitch for New Hampshire.
Hobson finally broke the shutout up in the bottom of the ninth, taking a 1-2 fastball from Pedro Rodriguez and depositing it over the right-field fence for a solo blast. The homer was Hobson's sixth on the season, and it trimmed the lead to 12-1.
The Fisher Cats will look to even up the series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. It's Faith & Family Night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. There will also be Baseball Bingo presented by USA Subs, and Next Step Bionics & Prosthetics will team up with the Fisher Cats to honor an individual who has battled a significant medical event in his life. Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com or by calling the ticket office at (603)-641-2005.
Joel Pineiro (1-2) will be on the mound for the Fisher Cats looking to pick up his second win of the season and get the Fisher Cats back on the winning track. Radio coverage will begin at 6:45 p.m. with Ben Gellman on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and at www.nhfishercats.com.
