Conforto Clutch in 8-7 Win

BINGHAMTON, NY - Michael Conforto lined a two-run double to the left field alley in the ninth inning, pushing the Binghamton Mets to an 8-7 walk-off victory over the Reading Fightin Phils on Friday night at NYSEG Stadium. Conforto produced his second three-RBI game, Gavin Cecchini collected four hits, and Brock Peterson belted a grand slam in his B-Mets debut. It was Binghamton's fifth walk-off win of the year, helping them snap a three-game losing streak.

Reading opened the scoring in the second inning, with the help of two Binghamton errors. The first three batters all recorded hits off Michael Fulmer en route to three runs, but just one earned. Cam Perkins doubled to right field to drive in the first run of the game after a Cecchini throwing error pushed a man into scoring position. Brodie Greene then singled to short, allowing the second run to score when Cecchini sailed his throw past first base. The third run of the inning came in on a Gustavo Pierre groundout.

More shaky defense allowed Binghamton to get on the board in the third. After Jesse Biddle got the first two outs, a Pierre error at third extended the inning. A Cecchini single and a Conforto walk then loaded the bases. Brock Peterson, in his first game with the B-Mets, launched a grand slam to left field to give Binghamton a 4-3 lead.

The B-Mets would take advantage of another error, adding on to their lead in the fourth. With two outs, Eudy Pina singled to extend the inning. Fulmer helped his own cause by blooping a single to center field. Roman Quinn airmailed the throw to third, into Reading's bullpen, giving Pina home plate and the B-Mets a 5-3 lead.

The B-Mets added on in the next inning when Cecchini doubled to lead off the fifth, and came around to score on a Conforto single to right.

Reading responded in the visiting half of the seventh, starting the inning with a JP Crawford and a two-run blast from Aaron Altherr to left field. After getting the first out, Fulmer allowed a double and walked a man, ending his night. Matt Koch was the first man out of the B-Met bullpen, and was greeted with an RBI single from Rene Garcia to right field. Pierre then grounded out to second base, pushing across the go-ahead run.

Leading 8-7, Nefi Ogando remained on in the ninth inning for the two inning save. With one out, Yeixon Ruiz bunted his way on to first base. Cecchini then stroked his fourth hit of the night, a single to left, to push the tying run into scoring position. With one out, Conforto came to the plate and proceeded to line a double into the gap in left-center field, driving in both runners for the 8-7 win.

Beck Wheeler (3-1) got the win in relief, tossing a scoreless ninth inning. Nefi Ogando (2-2) took the loss, allowing two runs in 1 1/3 innings. It was his fourth blown save in six tries. Bobby Parnell pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning, needing just 10 pitches.

The B-Mets (27-27) continue their series with Reading Saturday night, with a 7:05 PM first pitch at NYSEG Stadium. RHP Robert Gsellman (0-1, 13.50) gets the start for Binghamton, against RHP Reinier Roibal (1-1, 1.80). POSTGAME NOTES: Friday was the B-Mets third win this year when trailing after eight innings...Beck Wheeler has not allowed a run in his last seven appearances... Binghamton has won five in a row against Reading at NYSEG Stadium.
