Richmond's Ricky Oropesa Named May Player of the Month

Portland, ME -- The Eastern League is pleased to announce that Richmond Flying Squirrels first baseman Ricky Oropesa has been named the Eastern League Player of the Month for the month of May. Oropesa batted .343 (37-for-108) with eight doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 25 RBIs, 12 runs scored, a .371 on-base percentage and a .602 slugging percentage in 29 games during the month. The 25-year old had at least one hit in 22 of the games he played in during the month and had multiple hits in 10 of those games. He also drove in at least one run in 17 of the games he played in during the month, including five straight games from May 5th-May 9th. The 6'3", 225 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in slugging percentage (.602), OPS (.973) and total bases (65) during the month of May. He also finished ranked among the monthly leaders in home runs (6-2nd), RBIs (25-2nd), extra-base hits (15-tied 3rd), hits (37-tied 4th) and batting average (.343-5th).

Oropesa, who is a native of Los Angeles, California, returned to Richmond this season after spending parts of the past two seasons with the Flying Squirrels. He is hitting .257 with nine doubles, seven home runs and 28 RBIs in 48 games for the Flying Squirrels this season.

Ricky was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the third round of the 2011 draft after batting .322 with seven home runs, 44 RBIs and 35 runs scored in 56 games as a junior at the University of Southern California. Oropesa was a two-time All-Pac-10 Conference selection and batted .331 with 40 homers and 159 RBIs in 170 career games at USC.
