Calgary Hitmen News Release
Calgary, AB - It was a physical match between the Calgary Hitmen and the Winnipeg Ice Wednesday night at the Saddledome. The Hitmen came close to a win over the undefeated Ice, but came up short in 3-2 loss.
The game started with a hit on David Adaszynksi by Connor MClennon leading to a five minute major for boarding. MClennon was ejected from the game just 1:21 into the first period. At the tail end of the Hitmen power play, Winnipeg cracked the scoreboard first with Mikey Milne netting a shorthanded goal 5:49 in. The teams traded penalties throughout the rest of the first period, but it remained a one goal game.
In the second period, Owen Pederson put in Winnipeg's second goal of the game on the power play but was quickly answered with a goal from Blake Heward, his first of the season.
Sean Tshirgel tied the game up with his fifth of the year with helpers from Heward and Evan Toth to make it a tie game 5:49 into the third. Just when it was looking like it was going to overtime, Conor Geekie found the back of the net with four minutes left to play. The Hitmen gave a good push at the end with the six on five man advantage but the Ice held on to finish the game with a 3-2 victory.
With a goal and an assist, Blake Heward received the first star of the game. It was also a notable game for Captain Jackson van de Leest, who played his 200th WHL game tonight.
The Hitmen homestand continues on Sunday, Oct. 31 with a Halloween matinee against the Red Deer Rebels. Game time is 2:00 p.m. at Scotiabank Saddledome with fans encouraged to dress in their Halloween costume and enjoy trick-or-treating on the concourse. Calgary will then open a home-and-home with Edmonton by hosting the Oil Kings on Friday, Nov. 5 at 7:00 p.m. before making the return trip to the Alberta capital on Nov. 6.
