Something's Got to Give as Broncos Host Pats

October 28, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Swift Current Broncos News Release

SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos (2-5-2-0) are looking to end a seven-game losing streak as they welcome the Regina Pats (2-7-0-0) to the Innovation Credit Union iPlex Friday night. One of those teams will be on an eight-game slide when the final buzzer sounds, as the Pats are also on a seven-game losing streak after beginning their season 2-0, much like Swift Current.

The Broncos have been off since a disappointing 5-2 loss to the Calgary Hitmen on home ice last Friday. Trailing 5-0 after the second period the Broncos showed signs of life in the third, aided by a trio of power plays, but only mustered two goals in the final minutes with the game out of reach.

Caleb Wyrostok and Josh Filmon scored for the Broncos with both goals coming off turnovers by the Hitmen in their own zone.

Second periods have been difficult for the Broncos through nine games in 2021-22 and last weekend was no different as the Hitmen scored three times and outshot the Broncos 14-3 in the middle frame. To date, the Broncos have been outscored 12-5 and outshot 134-70 in second periods.

While the Broncos have gotten to overtime twice during their slide, the Pats haven't been so fortunate as they've lost their last seven games in regulation. Regina has been outscored 31-14 but only outshot 211-207 during their seven-game slide.

The Pats were last in action on Sunday when they fell 4-1 in Saskatoon. Discipline was a factor in the outcome as the Blades had nine power play opportunities, though capitalized on just one. Regina has given up the first goal in each of their last seven games, and a power play goal in their last eight.

Friday will be the first of six meetings between the Broncos and Pats in 2021-22. Regina won three of the four meetings during the Hub season in the Spring of 2021.

The Broncos will get a boost to their lineup as 20-year-old forward Cole Nagy will suit up for his first game of the season. The 6'6" Nagy should provide some major help to the Broncos in the faceoff circle specifically as he posted a 55.9 per cent win rate in the circle during the Hub season. The Broncos as a team this year are just 43.6 per cent.

Friday will also be the first time Broncos fans will get a look at 2020 first overall WHL Prospects Draft pick Connor Bedard. The 2005-born forward was named the WHL's rookie of the year last year after posting 28 points in just 15 games. He then scored seven goals and added seven assists in seven games at the World U18 Hockey Championships, helping Canada claim gold. He is widely regarded as the likely first overall pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.
