Utah Grizzlies News Release
WEST VALLEY CITY, UTAH - The Utah Grizzlies, in conjunction with their National Hockey League (NHL) affiliate the Dallas Stars, announced today that goaltender Corey Hirsch has been loaned to the Canadian National Team to participate in the tournament for the Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland running from December 26-31.
Hirsch, 30, has played in 17 games for the Grizzlies this season posting a 8-7-0-1 record with a 2.94 goals against average and a .920 save percentage. Hirsch was a member of the Silver Medal winning Canadian Olympic team during the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer where he posted a 5-2-1 record and carried a 2.18 goals against average. The Medicine Hat, Alberta native has earned many distinguished honors during his career including being named the Canadian Major Junior Goaltender-of-the-Year in 1992, being awarded the American Hockey League's Rookie of the Year following the 1992-93 season (w/Binghamton) and being named to the NHL's All-Rookie team following the 1995-96 season (w/Vancouver).
The former eighth round draft selection of the New York Rangers in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft has played in 106 NHL games in his career posting a 34-44-14 record with a 3.15 goals against average.
"National Hockey League organizations have always been very cooperative when it comes to recruiting players for Canada's National Men's Program," said Canadian National Hockey's General Manager Steve Tambellini. "I feel we have put together a solid hockey team with both the players currently playing in Europe and the players that have been loaned to us by their NHL organizations."
Hirsch is joined by Toronto Maple Leaf goaltender Jamie Hodson (currently with the St. John's Maple Leafs) as the goaltending duo. Other players loaned from their NHL teams include Atlanta's Luke Sellars (Chicago-AHL), the New York Rangers Bobby Andrew (Hartford-AHL) and Edmonton's Mike Bishai (Columbus-ECHL). Other former NHL players on the roster include Jamie Heward, James Black, Paul DiPietro and Mike Criag.
Hirsch will leave the Grizzlies following their current three-game road trip, which concludes in Hartford on Saturday, December 21, and miss the Grizzlies games versus Cleveland (Dec. 27 & 28) and Grand Rapids (Dec. 30 & 31).
