Louisiana IceGators News Release

Lafayette, LA – Louisiana IceGators defenseman Kevin Mitchell, currently on loan to AHL Bridgeport, has been named a starter for the 2003 Compuware/ECHL All-Star Game in Estero, Fla., on Tuesday, Jan. 21. The 22-year-old Mitchell, who leads all ECHL defensemen with 27 assists, will make his second straight All-Star appearance, having also played in last year's contest in Trenton, N.J.

Mitchell played his first game with Bridgeport last night, notching a power-play goal in a 2-2 tie with Hamilton. With the IceGators this season, Mitchell is fourth on the team in points with 32 (5g, 27a).

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound defenseman had three assists in eight games with Hamilton in 2000-01 after finishing his junior career. Last season, Mitchell was an ECHL All-Rookie selection, notching 39 points (7g, 32a) and 127 penalty minutes in 63 games. He also saw action in 10 games with AHL Houston, failing to record a point.

In 111 career pro games, Mitchell has 75 points (13g, 62a) and 230 penalty minutes. In his IceGators career, Mitchell has 71 points (12g, 59a) in 92 games.

Louisiana has had at least one starter in each All-Star game in its eight years of existence. Last season, goaltender Frederic Cloutier started, while Dave Farrish was a coach for the Southern Conference. Chris Valicevic was the IceGators' last starter on the blueline, in the 2001 All-Star Game.

The IceGators play two more times this week, starting with Friday's 7:35 p.m. game in Mississippi – the team's ninth contest this season against the Sea Wolves. Saturday, the IceGators return home for a 7:05 p.m. game against Arkansas, with a post-game skate with the players after the contest.
