Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - Peoria Chiefs starter Rich Hill struck out 12 Wisconsin Timber Rattlers over eight innings in leading the Peoria Chiefs to a 5-2 victory Friday night at O'Brien Field. The Chiefs offense also had a solid night, as five players had a multi-hit game. The Chiefs snapped a four-game losing streak and are now 7-9 in the second half, 42-44 overall.
Hill, starting for Peoria instead of Iowa because of bad weather in New Orleans, was outstanding in picking up the win. He allowed just one earned run on five hits, walking none and striking out 12. He also got some help defensively, as Peoria shortstop Joe Simokaitis made a diving stop on a ground ball in shallow left field and threw out a Wisconsin runner to end the 7th inning.
Wisconsin scored an unearned run in the 1st inning to take a 1-0 lead. Chris Colton singled with one out before moving second on a botched pickoff play in which Drew Larsen's throw went to left field. Colton moved to third in the same at bat on a groundout, and scored on an RBI single from Mike Wilson.
The Chiefs answered in the 3rd inning. Ryan Harvey hit a one-out solo home run over the palm trees in left field to tie the game at 1-1. Drew Larsen singled to drive home Luis Montanez after a pair of walks from Wisconsin starter Randy Frye, and the Chiefs led 2-1.
An RBI-single from Eric Patterson in the 4th stretched the Chiefs lead to 3-1 before Wisconsin cut their deficit to 3-2 in the 6th on a run-scoring single from Brandon Green. The Chiefs put it away in the bottom of the 6th after an RBI double from Harvey. Peoria added another when Harvey moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch for a 5-2 lead.
Tim Layden gave up a two-out double in the 9th before striking out Marshall Hubbard to end the game and record the save. He now has four saves on the year. Frye took the loss for Wisconsin, falling to 2-3.
