Lansing Lugnuts News Release
DAYTON - Russ Savickas worked six quality innings as he allowed six hits and an earned run and the Lugnuts collected at least one hit in every inning of action as they finished off their four-game series with the Dayton Dragons by earning a 6-1 win on Thursday night at Fifth Third Field. With the win, Lansing takes the four game series, three wins to one, and also ended its eight-game road trip to Cedar Rapids and Dayton by going 4-4.
For the fourth straight night in the series, the Lugnuts jumped out to the early lead. In the first, Curtis Thigpen drew a one-out walk, went to third on a double by Eric Nielsen and scored on a sacrifice fly by David Hicks.
The Lugnuts would extend their lead in the second inning as Christian Snavely led off with a single and Ryan Klosterman followed with his eighth homer of the season, a two-run shot to left center that made it 3-0.
In the fourth, Yuber Rodriguez doubled with one out and scored on a single by Eugenio Velez to make the lead for Savickas 4-0.
That lead would be plenty, but after the Dragons got their lone run in the contest in the fifth on a two-out single by Cody Strait, Lansing responded by getting the game's final two runs.
In the sixth, Rodriguez singled with one out and stole second base. Velez than drove him home for the second time in three innings by ripping a double to right. The game's final tally came in the ninth when with one out, Nielsen doubled and scored on a single by Hicks.
In all, the Lugnuts collected 16 hits on the evening, three each by Nielsen, Rodriguez and Snavely. Jordy Templet and Mark Sopko helped close out the win as they combined to hold the Dragons to just three hits in three innings of relief behind Savickas, who won his third straight decision.
Jeremiah Piepkorn went 2-4 and Phil Gentry went 2-5 in a losing effort for the Dragons. Josh Thigpen took the loss, allowing eight hits and four runs in four innings of work.
The Lugnuts now head home to tangle with the Kane County Cougars in the first of a four-game series on Friday night at Olds Park. Chi-Hung Cheng makes the start for the Lugnuts while Mike Rogers takes to the hill for the Cougars. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. with LAFCU Fireworks directly after the ballgame presented by LAFCU, Your Credit Union For Life.
