Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (July 7, 2005) - The South Bend Silver Hawks (10-5, 51-34) got four runs early, but it was the one they got late that made the difference in an 8-7 win over the Burlington Bees (6-9, 40-45) at Community Field tonight. A two-out double by Alberto Gonzalez in the top of the ninth was the game-winner to give the Silver Hawks a split of the four-game set. Bees' SS Irving Falu went 0-3 to end his hitting streak after 24 games. He did walk and drive in a run with a sacrifice fly. He has reached base safely by hit or walk in 29 consecutive games.

South Bend scored four times, all unearned runs, in the top of the first inning against Bees' starter Danny Christensen. Christensen walked two and committed two errors in the frame. Carlos Gonzales extended his hitting streak to eleven in a row with an RBI single and Billy Lockin drove in two with a single to center. The Bees responded with four runs in the bottom of the second against South Bend starter Steven Jackson. Darwinson Salazar ripped a two-run double down the left field line, Felipe Del Rosario drove in a run with a single, and the final run scored on Falu's sac fly.

South Bend got the lead right back in the top of the third when Cesar Nicholas belted a solo shot to left to leadoff the inning. It was Nicolas' third homer of the series and his 14th of the season. The Silver Hawks added another run in the fourth. After the first two batters singled, Gabe DeHoyos replaced Christensen and allowed Gonzalez to score on a wild pitch with one out before getting out of the inning. DeHoyos worked three scoreless innings and struck out four.

The Bees got one back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Brian McFall that plated Mario Lisson. Lisson scored two runs and has scored a run in eight consecutive games for a total of 16. Jackson gave way to Esmerling Vasquez with the bases loaded and two outs, and Vasquez struck out Del Rosario to end the inning. He didn't fare as well in the sixth. Cody Cure led off with a bouncer back to the mound that he mishandled and then fired down the right field line for a three-base error. After a bounceout, he walked two to load the bases. Damaso Espino hit a grounder to third and Augie Murillo threw home, but Wilkin Castillo dropped the ball and Cure was safe to tie the score. After a strikeout, Vasquez walked Eddie Solis to force in Lisson and the Bees had their first lead at 7-6.

Justin Sherman took over for the Bees in the top of the seventh and allowed a two-out single to Castillo that drove in Mark Reynolds to tie the score. In the top of the ninth, Castillo blooped a two-out double into short left-center while the Bees were playing deep and then scored when Alberto Gonzalez lined a double into right center. Matt Elliott came in for the bottom of the ninth and walked Solis to start the inning, but got out without allowing a run for his 22nd save. Sherman (1-3) suffered the loss for the Bees. Josh Perrault (4-2) pitched a scoreless eighth and picked up the win. Lisson left the game with an injured left shoulder suffered while diving for a ground ball down the line in the top of the seventh.

The Bees are on the road tomorrow night to start a four-game series against the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field. RH Patrick Green (3-7, 4.66) will start for the Bees. The game will start at 7:00 and will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
