Burlington Bees News Release
Beloit, WI (July 8, 2005) - Patrick Green allowed just one run and struck out five in a career-high eight innings as the Burlington Bees (7-9, 41-45) beat the Beloit Snappers (8-8, 41-45) 5-1 at Pohlman Field tonight to take game one of a four-game series. The win snapped a streak of four straight losing decisions for Green going back to June 4th.
The Bees scored the first run against Snappers' starter Jose Mijares in the top of the first inning. Irving Falu led off with a double, stole third, and scored on a groundout by Damaso Espino. The Snappers tied the game in the bottom of the first on a solo home run by Luke Hughes. It turned out to be the only run as Green (4-7) scattered six hits and two walks. Chad Blackwell finished off the game in the ninth and walked one.
The Bees took the lead in the top of the fifth. Robert Grana drew a leadoff walk and Cody Cure singled to left. Falu laid down a bunt that Mijares fielded and threw to third, but bounced the throw in the dirt for an error and everyone was safe. Mijares got Geraldo Valentin to hit into a 4-6-3 double play as Grana scored and the Bees led 2-1. Rusty Brown led off the top of the sixth inning with a solo homer to center field. Brown leads the team with nine homers and has hit four in his last two games against Beloit. Mijares (4-3) had been 2-0 against the Bees, but has lost his last three starts.
Kyle Aselton pitched the final three innings in relief and allowed the final two runs in the seventh inning. Valentin led off with a double and went to third on a single by Espino. Brown hit a chopper to third that David Winfree fielded and threw toward the plate. His throw sailed wide as Valentin scored and Brown had his second RBI of the game. He leads the team with 44 on the year. After striking out the next two batters, Aselton walked Eddie Solis and Grana to force in the Bees' final run.
The Bees and Snappers will continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Pohlman Field. RH Patrick Hicklen (4-4, 4.25) will start for the Bees against RH David Shinskie (1-6, 7.88) for the Snappers. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
