Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - Dragons fans have been treated to games filled with high offense from both teams. However, Friday night the Dayton Dragons (38-48, 8-8) defeated the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays (41-44, 8-8) by a 3-1 final score in a pitcher's duel at Fifth Third Field. 8,000 fans watched Carlos Bohorquez (W, 1-3) throw three innings of perfect baseball to earn the win and Brandon Mann (L, 5-7) suffer the loss. Dragons pitchers allowed just nine runners to reach base all night - only three of which were base hits.
Both starting pitchers threw very efficiently early on; the Dragons Juan Frias (ND) exited after 4.0 innings - finishing with five strikeouts and allowed just one Southwest Michigan hit. Mann pitched just as well through the first four innings, allowing just two Dragons hits while punching out four. However, in the fifth, Mann ran into trouble; after a Drew Anderson single, Cody Strait bettered an 0-2 night at the plate by hitting a two-run homer to left field. B.J. Szymanski followed and reached on a three-base fielding error when Shaun Cumberland dropped a routine fly ball in right field. Jeremiah Piepkorn then singled him in with a shot to left field, making it 3-0 Dragons.
Frias' replacement, Bohorquez, took over the reigns in the fifth inning and picked up where the Dragons starter left off. In fact, Bohorquez pitched a perfect 3.0 innings of work - setting down all nine batters he faced in order. More impressively, only one of his thirty pitches reached outfield airspace. Tony Perez (ND) replaced Mann during the Dragons 3-run fifth inning; Perez pitched efficiently as well, throwing 2.2 innings of 1 hit baseball for Southwest Michigan but earned the no-decision.
Alexander Farfan (ND) relieved Bohorquez in the eighth inning but did not last long; after retiring the first batter he faced on a foul out, he walked three consecutive hitters before Dragons manager Alonzo Powell pulled the plug. Blake Hendley (S, 11) came into a bases loaded situation and allowed just one base hit, which scored the first Devil Rays run. He also recorded a strike out and forced a groundout to get out of the jam and keep Farfan off the hook.
Jose DeLaCruz (ND) kept the Devil Rays within striking distance at 3-2 heading into the ninth inning, by setting the bottom third of the Dragons lineup down in order to end the eighth. However, the comeback hopes were quickly put to rest as Hendley pitched a nearly perfect ninth inning, allowing just one hit and clinching the 3-1 win with a strikeout of Shaun Cumberland.
The Dragons continue the second half of their eight-game home stand on Saturday night against the Devil Rays a 7:00 PM first pitch. 1410 ESPN Radio carries the game live with the pre game show beginning at 6:30 PM. RHP Homer Bailey gets the ball for the Dragons while LHP Eddie DeLaCruz will throw for Southwest Michigan.
