Last inning jolt goes nowhere

West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

CLINTON, IA - The Whitecaps loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the ninth, conjuring images of a pair of ninth inning comebacks in the last week. However, a double play and a fly out later, West Michigan managed only one run in the inning and fell 6-2 at Clinton.

In the first inning, the Whitecaps took the lead, 1-0. Brent Dlugach hit a ground rule double into the right field corner, then scored when Luis Sabino reached on a throwing error by shortstop Casey Benjamin.

Clinton tied the game in the bottom of the first thanks to a lead-off triple by Brandon Cashman, who scored on a ground out by Tug Hulett. Craig Hurba picked up his first Midwest League hit in the second on a solo home run to right, which put the Lumberkings on top for good, 2-1.

Hurba also had an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth, then walked and scored in the seventh. Brandon Boggs hit his fourth home run nine days to make the lead 6-1 in the eighth.

Josh Lee was 3-for-3 for the Whitecaps with a double and was hit by a pitch to load the bases in the ninth. Justin Justice scored on a double play hit into by the next batter, Chris Robinson.

Solid Foundation: Going into Friday's action, every Minor League team in the Tigers organization except the West Michigan was on a multi-game winning streak. Four of the six teams lead their respective divisions: Triple-A Toledo (5 straight wins), Double-A Erie (2 in a row), Short Season Single-A Oneonta (5 in a row) and the Rookie level Gulf Coast League Tigers (2 in a row) are all in first place. The Whitecaps and Lakeland (9 wins in a row) are both in second place and less than a game from first.
