Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- Shaun Cumberland, Chris Nowak and John Jaso each homered in a 10-4 win over the Clinton LumberKings in a Devil Rays victory Thursday night at C.O. Brown Stadium.
The win was payback for a 12-2 loss the day before as Southwest Michigan split the four-game series and brought their second half record to 8-7. Cumberland had four RBI while Patrick Breen and Brandon Rousseve each recorded one RBI of their own.
Jino Gonzalez was spotted a 7-0 lead by the fifth inning as he cruised to his third win of the season. He pitched five innings and allowed five hits and two runs despite matching his career high for walks surrendered with six. Gonzalez struck out three.
The Rays left 10 men on base but the three home runs were enough to overcome the statistic. Rousseve made his first start as a Devil Ray since being acquired by the team before yesterday's game. After booting the first chance he had at shortstop, he had two hits, the aforementioned RBI and a stolen base while scoring two runs. John Jaso hit his team-leading 12th home run in the third inning.
Southwest Michigan heads to Dayton to begin a four-game set that will blanket the weekend. The Rays will send LHP Brandon Mann (5-6, 4.40) to the mound against Dayton LHP Juan Frias. The Devil Rays return home on Wednesday, July 13 for NASCAR Night which will feature a show car as well as memorabilia and ticket giveaways. The game starts at 7:05 p.m. against the Lansing Lugnuts.
