Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY - Anthony Hermelyn slugged a three-run homer during a five-run fourth inning, as the Tri-City ValleyCats defeated the Hudson Valley Renegades 6-5 at Dutchess Stadium in Wappingers Falls, N.Y., on Monday night.
With the game tied 1-1 with one out in the top of the fourth frame, Hermelyn smashed a 1-2 pitch from Renegades left-hander Michael Velasquez into the trees beyond the left field fence, driving home Hector Roa and Dexture McCall, to put the 'Cats ahead 4-1.
That was not the end of the 'Cats scoring, however, as Antonio Nunez drove home Brooks Marlow, and Johnny Sewald scored on a wild pitch, helping Tri-City jump out to a 6-1 lead before the fourth inning was complete.
The Renegades were able to make the game close, scoring once in the fifth inning, once in the sixth, and twice in the ninth, before 'Cats reliever Jacob Dorris came into the game with two outs and a runner on in the final frame, and promptly struck out Hudson Valley designated hitter Joe McCarthy to end the game.
Scott Weathersby got the start for Tri-City, striking out six batters, while allowing only one unearned run in four innings.
Trent Thornton (3-0) got the win for the 'Cats, striking out four batters in 3.2 frames, while Dorris earned his second save by sealing the victory.
Offensively, eight different Tri-City batters registered at least one hit, while Marlow (3-for-4 with a run and one run batted in), Nunez (3-for-5 with a run batted in), and Hermelyn (2-for-4 with the home run and three runs batted in) posted multi-hit performances.
Following the Lowell Spinners' 7-6 loss to the Brooklyn Cyclones, the ValleyCats now lead the New York-Penn League Stedler Divison by two games, and will look to add to that margin in Tuesday's second game of a three-game set against the Renegades. On the mound for for Hudson Valley will be RHP Roel Ramirez (3-1, 2.56), with RHP Rogelio Armenteros (1-1, 4.65) getting the start for Tri-City.
