West Virginia Black Bears News Release
The West Virginia Black Bears defeated the Auburn Doubledays 6-3 in the first game of the series on Monday night at Monongalia County Ballpark. With tonight's victory, West Virginia improves to 23-20 this season while the Doubledays fall to 20-22 overall.
The Black Bears wasted no time in taking an early advantage by crossing the game's first run in the bottom of the first. 2B Kevin Kramer singled to center field and later came around to score from third on a groundball by LF Ryan Nagle. Auburn evened the score in the top of the second on a double to left field and then jumped out to a 3-1 lead later in the inning on a two-run homer by Diomedes Eusebio.
It didn't take long for West Virginia to get on the board again as they score two runs in the bottom half of the third. After loading the bases with no outs, Nagle registered his second RBI of the game on a groundball, this time scoring SS Kevin Newman from third. DH Daniel Arribas then stepped up to the plate and drilled an RBI single to left field to tie the game at 3-3.
The Black Bears offense kept rolling in the fourth inning as C Christian Kelley and 3B Mitchell Tolman led off the inning with back-to-back singles before Kramer ripped a single to center to score them and extend the lead to 5-3. In the fifth, West Virginia added on an insurance run on an RBI double to left-center by 1B Albert Baur.
West Virginia was led offensively by Kramer who finished the night going 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Arribas, Tolman and CF Casey Hughston all recorded two hits apiece as well to help propel the Black Bears to a win.
SP Luis Paula picked up the win (3-2) after pitching 5.0 inning, allowing three runs (all earned) and striking out five. RP Sean Keselica pitched two scoreless innings of relief while RP Edgar Santana pitched the final two innings to pick up his third save this season.
The Black Bears and Doubledays will continue the series on Tuesday, August 4 at Monongalia County Ballpark. SP Seth McGarry will be on the mound for West Virginia with a slated first pitch of 7:05 p.m.
