BURLINGTON, VT --- After Vermont took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a Nick Collins three-run homer, Staten Island scored eight unanswered runs as relievers Travis Hissong and Ethan Carnes combined to retire all 14 batters they faced to give the Yankees an 8-3 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Monday night at historic Centennial Field.

Collins staked Vermont to the quick 3-0 lead with a two-out three-run homer to rightfield off Staten Island starter Domingo Acevedo. It was the first professional home run for eighth-round pick out of Georgetownn University and the Lake Monsters league-leading 25th homer of the season (17 in 22 games at Centennial Field). The homer also made Collins the 14th different Vermont player to hit a home run this season.

But the Lake Monsters offense was shutout down after the Collins' homer as Skye Bolt had Vermont's third and final hit of the game to leadoff the fifth inning. After a walk and flyout, Hissong (1-0) came on in relief of Acevedo to get a forceout and caught stealing to end the fifth and then pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning. Carnes came on in the seventh and retired all nine Vermont batters he faced with six strikeouts, including four of the last five and the side in the ninth inning.

The Yankees got a pair of runs in the fourth to cut the deficit to 3-2, then took the lead in the fifth on a Zach Zehner bases loaded two-run single that also scored Kyle Holder from first base on a fielding error by centerfielder Bolt. Staten Island added another unearned run in the inning on a Junior Valera sacrifice fly for a 6-3 lead and added two more runs (one earned) off reliever Jared Lyons in the seventh inning.

Vermont starter Jonnie Massad (3-4) retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced before the Yankees touched him for six runs (four earned) on seven hits in the fourth and fifth innings combined. Reliever Andrew Tomosovich retired all six Yankee batters he faced in the eighth and ninth innings with one strikeout. Valera was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI for Staten Island (22-19), while Jeff Hendrix 2-for-5 with two runs.

The Lake Monsters (17-25) and Yankees will meet each other again on Tuesday night at Centennial beginning at 7:05 pm. One lucky family in attendance will win a trip for four to Disney World with airfare included.
