IronBirds Drop Series Opener to Tigers

The IronBirds dropped the first game of a six-game homestand, 7-4 to the Connecticut Tigers on Monday night. Connecticut scored five runs in the second inning to lead them to the win.

One Bad Inning

Connecticut struck for five runs in the second inning, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. In four consecutive at-bats, Victor Padron singled in a run, Pat McKenzie drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, A.J. Simcox plated another run with a base hit, and Josh Lester knocked in a pair with another single.

There's Fight in These Birds

Aberdeen answered back with two runs in the bottom of the inning, cutting the Tigers lead to three. Mike Odenwaelder drove in the 'Birds first run with a sacrifice fly to center, before Drew Turbin made it 5-2 with a line drive to right.

Back to Four

The Tigers pushed their lead back to four in the fourth with a sacrifice fly from Simcox, his second RBI of the night.

Creeping Back

After DJ Stewart tripled in the sixth, Chris Shaw made it 6-3 with a fly out to right that allowed Stewart to hustle home.

Extra Bases, Extra Runs

Connecticut scored another run in the seventh on an RBI triple from Joey Havrilak that brought Shane Zeile all the way in from first.

Still Fighting

The IronBirds scored once in the ninth on an RBI single from Glynn Davis, but it wasn't enough on Monday night as Aberdeen fell, 7-4.

Bird Watching

Glynn Davis notched two hits in his fourth rehab appearance... Davis played all nine innings as the designated hitter...Lazaro Leyva pitched a hitless third inning, pushing his hitless innings streak to nine... Leyva allowed two hits and a run in the fourth to break that streak...DJ Stewart tripled in the sixth, his second of the season.
