Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
Wappingers Falls, NY (8/3/15)- The Hudson Valley Renegades fell in the series opener to the Tri-City ValleyCats on Monday evening by a score of 6-5 at Dutchess Stadium.
After a scoreless first inning, both teams traded runs in the second inning. Tri-City second baseman Brooks Marlow had a RBI single to take a 1-0 lead and Hudson Valley center fielder Angel Moreno had a two-out RBI single to tie the score at 1-1.
The ValleyCats scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead, highlighted by a three-run home run from catcher Anthony Hermelyn and a RBI single from shortstop Antonio Nunez.
Hudson Valley started to chip away at the Tri-City lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as with two outs, catcher Taylor Hawkins doubled and second baseman Jake Cronenworth brought home Hawkins with a RBI single, bringing the Tri-City lead to 6-2. The ValleyCats lead would shrink to 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning on a RBI double from third baseman Alex Schmidt.
The score remained 6-3 until the bottom of the ninth as the Renegades rallied with two outs. Hawkins singled and moved to third base on a double from Cronenworth. On a full count, shortstop Michael Russell brought both Hawkins and Cronenworth with a two-run single to bring the score to 6-5. Tri-City brought in reliever Jacob Dorris to face designated hitter Joe McCarthy and Dorris struck him out to pick up his second save of the season.
Hudson Valley's starting pitcher Michael Velasquez (1-3) took the loss as he allowed six runs off ten hits in four innings of work while striking out five batters.
Trent Thornton (3-0) earned the win in relief for the ValleyCats as he gave up two runs in three and two-thirds innings of work. With the result, the Renegades fell to 20-22 while the ValleyCats improved their record to 24-19.
Notes: Manny Sanchez had his second-consecutive multi-hit night as he went two-for four with a run scored on the evening. On Sunday against Auburn, Sanchez went two-for-five with a RBI and now has eight multi-hit games in 2015, which is third most on the Renegades.
