Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

ABERDEEN, MD-The Connecticut Tigers (20-21) took the first game of a three game series with the Aberdeen IronBirds (20-22) by a score of 7-4. It was the second straight win for Connecticut and they have now won six of seven road games.

Sandy Baez (2-3) started for the Tigers and picked up his first win since June 30th against Tri-City. Baez pitched six innings allowing eight hits and three runs while striking out two. At one point during the middle of the game he retired seven straight batters.

Francisco Jimenez (2-4) started for Aberdeen and didn't fare nearly as well. After a scoreless first inning Connecticut struck for five runs in the second, an inning that saw them send 10 batters to the plate. Leftfielder Jose Zambrano started the inning with a single and moved to third with one out on a double by right fielder Joey Havrilak (2-4, 2B, 3B, RBI). After a walk to load the bases centerfielder Victor Padron (3-5, R, RBI) drove in a run with a base hit making it 1-0.

Second basemen Pat Mackenzie drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly and shortstop AJ Simcox plated another with a single. Third basemen Josh Lester capped the scoring with a two RBI single making it 5-0.

In the bottom half of the inning Baez did run into some trouble. Aberdeen loaded the bases with nobody out after three straight singles. However, Baez was able to limit the damage. Right fielder Mike Odenwaelder drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and second basemen Drew Turbin (1-2, RBI, 2 BB) drove in a run with a single making it 5-2 but that was all the IronBirds would get.

Late in the game with the score 6-3 Connecticut put the game out of reach in the seventh. Catcher Shane Zeile singled to lead off the inning and scored one batter later when Havrilak tripled to deep centerfield pushing the advantage to 7-3.

With Nate Fury on the mound Aberdeen did load the bases in the bottom of the seventh but Fury was able to finish the inning without allowing a run. Fury ended up going two innings without allowing a run or a hit. He did walk two and strikeout three. Jack Fischer pitched the ninth allowing a run on one hit and a strikeout and walk.

The IronBirds went through five pitchers in the game. Three of the five allowed runs. Only Garrett Cleavinger and Daniel Ayers were able to work scoreless outings.

Connecticut will play the second game of the three game series at Aberdeen on Tuesday. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
