Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - The Brooklyn Cyclones arrived in Lowell the worst hitting team in the New York-Penn League. They left LeLacheur Park after battering Spinners pitching for 14 hits to hand Lowell a 7-6 defeat to start the six-game homestand.

Brooklyn (22-20) got on the board first in the third inning. After the nine-man in the line-up, Alfredo Reyes, singled to lead off the inning, he moved into scoring position on a groundout, took third on a stolen base and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Michael Bernal to jump ahead, 1-0.

The Cyclones would extend their lead by a run in the fourth. Enmanuel Zabala led off the inning with a double and came around to score one batter later on a double play to extend the lead to two.

Lowell (22-21) responded with a three run fourth inning to take the lead. With the bases loaded and one out, Tate Matheny hit a fly to centerfield that Zabala misplayed into a two-run double. A sacrifice fly from Kyri Washington gave the Spinners a 3-2 lead.

The Spinners added to their lead in the fifth, again taking advantage of some curious defense by the Cyclones. After Jeremy Rivera reached on a pop-up caught by no-one, Andrew Benintendi followed with an infield single of his own. A Victor Acosta single to right, which fell in front of three Cyclones, plated Rivera and a Tucker Tubbs sacrifice fly extended the Lowell lead to 5-2.

After Brooklyn got a run back in the sixth against Danny Zandona, they took the lead during an elongated top half of the seventh inning. Reyes singled to lead off the inning and took second on a wild pitch, scoring on the first of three consecutive doubles by the Cyclones. Taylor Nunez entered in relief and allowed doubles by Bernal and Jeff Diehl plated another run to give the Cyclones a 6-5 lead. A bases loaded hit-batter would extend the lead to 7-5.

The Spinners would get a run in the eighth, inning after Tubbs led off the inning with a double. De La Guerra followed with an infield single and after Matheny popped out on an attempted sacrifice, Tubbs took third on a wild pitch, but Chad De La Guerra got hung up and was nabbed at second. It would come back to bite the Spinners as Washington singled home a run. Washington moved to second on an error on a pick-off attempt but was stranded there when pinch-hitter Mitch Gunsolus struck out.

The Spinners nearly sent the game to extra innings when Andrew Benintendi took a two-out, two-strike offering off the very top off the rightfield wall for a triple, but was left there as Victor Acosta struck out to end the game.

Benintendi, in his first game since July 30 at Williamsport, picked up three hits in his return to the line-up and part of the Spinners 13-hit attack. Tubbs, De La Guerra and Washington each added two-hit nights.

Kevin Steen, making his Spinners debut, went five innings, allowing two runs on eight hits and a pair of walks. He struck out two. Zandona allowed three runs on four hits over 1.1 innings, striking out a pair. Nunez (2-2, 2.21) was charged with the loss, allowing two runs on two hits, walking a batter and striking out both outs he recorded. Bobby Poyner pitched two hitless, striking out four to give the Spinners a chance at the comeback.

The two teams square off again Tuesday night when Jake Cosart (2-2, 5.63) gets the ball for the Spinners with a 7:05 first pitch.
