ANCHORAGE, Alaska - With two shutouts of Utah last week, Alaska goalie Derek Gustafson has earned ECHL Goaltender of the Week honors for the week of January 1-7.

Gustafson stifled the Grizzlies twice in four days last week, turning aside 26 shots in a 7-0 rout January 3 and stopping all 22 he faced in Saturday's 6-0 whitewash, extending his scoreless streak to 127:47. He has won four of five starts against Utah this season while posting a 1.00 goals against average and a .966 save percentage. The 27-year-old Gustafson has not allowed a goal in his last 132 minutes played against the Grizzlies.

After losing six of his first eight decisions, Gustafson has gone 7-1-1 in his last nine starts with a 1.56 GAA and a .943 save percentage. For the season, he ranks tied for second in the ECHL with three shutouts (the other came Dec. 20 against Idaho, giving him three in his last six starts) and 10th with a 2.63 GAA.

Gustafson signed with Alaska for his seventh year as a pro this summer, having spent much of the last two seasons in the United Hockey League after finishing runner-up in the ECHL Goaltender of the Year Voting in 2004 while playing for Louisiana. After leading St. Lawrence to the NCAA Frozen Four as a freshman in 2000, Gustafson signed with the Minnesota Wild as a free agent the very next year, beating the New York Islanders 4-1 in March 2001 for his lone NHL victory. He later represented the Houston Aeros at the 2003 AHL All-Star Game.

Gustafson likely will be the starter tomorrow night when the Aces (20-10-2) return to action at Sullivan Arena against Victoria at 7:15 p.m., with the next two games against the Salmon Kings Saturday at 7:15 and Sunday at 5:05. The series finale marks the first Fred Meyer "Skate with the Aces." Tickets are available at www.alaskaaces.com or by calling 258-ACES.
