Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Akron, OH - Joe Gunkel dealt another seven inning gem and the Baysox defeated Akron 6-1 to end a brief two-game losing stretch. With Altoona falling to Trenton the Baysox extended their division lead to 2.5 games.
The Baysox grabbed the lead early. 2B Corban Joseph lined a sharp single to right field to start the game. That was followed by a line drive home run to right field by LF Tucker Nathans. The shot was the first with the Baysox for Nathans and the first struck by the Baysox in Akron this year.
Gunkel then went to work. Ever steady, Gunkel worked seven innings for a fourth consecutive start. He threw a season-high 94 pitches, allowing four hits and a run in the win.
Bowie led 3-1 to the eighth inning when they opened the game up. With runners at second and third bases and one down, DH Rossmel Perez hit a hard groundball down the right field line. Akron's RF Carlos Moncrief could not cut it off and it went all the way to the corner. Both runners scored and Perez was around to third with a two-RBI triple.
He would score on a misplayed fly ball off the bat of CF Garabez Rosa and Bowie was up 6-1. Perez went 2-for-4 with three RBI's in the game.
Mychal Givens worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning striking out two batters. Richard Rodriguez closed the door with a scoreless ninth inning. The win ended a stretch in the season series between Bowie and Akron of the home team winning nine consecutive games. Akron goes into the series finale three games in back of the Baysox.
The Baysox conclude a four-game series in Akron with All-Star RHP Terry Doyle starting on the bump. Coverage will begin 20-minutes prior on 1430wnav.com and the Tune-In Radio App by searching Bowie Baysox.
Bowie returns home for a Fireworks Extravaganza on Saturday, July 4th as the Erie SeaWolves come to Prince George's Stadium. Be a part of the best Fireworks Show of the Season! Get tickets via phone at 301-805-6000 or online at baysox.com.
