New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats defeated the Reading Fightin' Phils by the score of 10-0 on Thursday evening at New Britain Stadium.
Rock Cats starter RHP Brett Marshall was outstanding in his first victory this season - a complete game three-hit performance. The former New York Yankee walked two and struck out eight in his first complete game since 2010 and the first nine inning complete game of his career.
The balls were flying out of the ballpark early and often as both C Tom Murphy and 1B Will Swanner homered off of Reading starter LHP Jesse Biddle. Murphy's longball, his team-leading 12th of the season, was a solo home run that was sent the opposite way over the wall in right-center while Swanner sent Biddle's offering off of the hitting tunnel just beyond the wall in the right field corner, scoring CF Noel Cuevas and putting the home club up 3-0.
New Britain tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, their highest output since a 13-3 victory at Bowie on June 23rd. 2B Zach Osbourne recorded his first RBI as a Rock Cat on a sacrifice bunt that scored RF Jeremy Barfield, who led off the inning with a single. SS Pat Valaika and LF Mike Tauchman chipped in with an RBI double and single, respectively, to increase the lead to five.
Reading made a call to the bullpen in the bottom of the sixth and reliever RHP Ethan Martin was hit hard upon his arrival - giving up four straight hits, highlighted by a three-run homer by Valaika. The infielder's drive gave New Britain a 9-0 advantage, which proved to be more than enough to snap the club's three game slide.
Swanner added his second home run of the night with a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth off of reliever LHP Joely Rodriguez.
Every batter in the Rock Cats' starting lineup hit safely on the night, totaling 14 hits, including three home runs.
Biddle falls to 7-2 in the losing effort - allowing six runs, all earned, on nine hits. The southpaw walked one and struck out seven.
New Britain wraps up the series against the Fightin' Phils on Friday evening with a 7:05 first pitch. RHP Shane Carle gets the nod for the Rock Cats while Reading throws out LHP Hoby Milner.
