Guerra Dominant in Save, Cakes Hold off Sacramento

New Orleans - Sandy Alcantara put together a solid start and Javy Guerra picked up his second save of the homestand as the New Orleans Baby Cakes held off the Sacramento River Cats 4-3 on Saturday evening.

The River Cats were stymied for most of the night, but an eighth inning run shaved the New Orleans lead to 4-3. Guerra entered in the ninth and pitched around a lead-off fielding error by retiring the next three batters all on strikeouts to preserve the victory for the home side.

New Orleans wasted no time getting on the board, plating a first inning run. Austin Dean continued his hot streak at the plate with a lead-off single. Four batters later, Tomas Telis drove him in on an RBI base hit to put the Cakes ahead 1-0.

The Cakes added two to their lead in the third on the second of three hits by Eric Campbell. New Orleans got to Sacramento starter, Daniel Camarena (0-1) for eight hits and four runs over five innings of work. Seven of those knocks came from the top three hitters in the order.

Sacramento got on the board in the fifth. Chase d'Arnaud led the inning off with the first walk of the game issued by Alcantara (5-2). Then Orlando Calixte parked a two-run shot to cut the Cakes lead to 3-2. Alcantara recovered to retire nine of his last ten batters faced. He went seven innings and allowed two runs on four hits. The New Orleans defense turned a pair of double plays behind him.

Campbell contributed three hits and three RBIs. Dean added two hits, a walk, and three runs. Since returning to New Orleans, Dean has racked up eight hits and scored six runs. Magneuris Sierra collected two hits and a run. Alcantara went at least seven innings for the fifth time this season. The pitching staff posted their third straight night of double digit strikeouts with 11.

The series continues Sunday at 1 p.m. Dillon Peters is scheduled to start for New Orleans and Mike Connolly is slated to go for Sacramento.
