Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (35-11-2-1) got four goals from Dylan Guenther on Saturday night as they steamrolled the Saskatoon Blades (26-18-1-1) by a 9-1 score at Rogers Place.
After a week off, the Oil Kings came correct in the first period of their six-game homestand scoring four times, including a couple of shorthanded markers, to take a 4-1 lead to the first intermission.
Jaxsen Wiebe opened the scoring just 6:09 into the first period. Jalen Luypen busted up a zone-entry by the Blades, he then sent a pass across the ice to spring Wiebe past the Blade defenders and with a ton of speed he made a nice move to his backhand to tuck home the shorthanded goal.
The Oil Kings added to their lead at the 11:45 mark of the frame as Guenther finished off some pretty passing by Carter Souch and Luke Prokop after they set him up for a one-time blast in front of the Saskatoon net.
The Blades were able to briefly pull back to within one as Trevor Wong slipped into the Edmonton zone on a Blades man-advantage and had his cross-crease pass tip in off an Oil Kings defender just 1:08 after the Guenther goal.
The Oil Kings restored their two-goal lead just 26 seconds later as Logan Dowhaniuk gathered in the puck off the center-ice faceoff, sped into the Blades zone down the left side of the ice and from the circle snapped a low shot through the legs of Nolan Maier for another shorthanded Edmonton goal.
Before the period was out, Guenther would tack on his second of the period and again finished off some nice passing, this time hammering home a one-timer off a nifty drop pass from Simon Kubicek.
The Oil Kings continued to push the pace in the second period, and just 2:40 into the period, Guenther would finish off his hat-trick in style as he collected the puck in behind the Saskatoon net and pulled off "The Michigan" lacrosse style goal to make it 5-1.
Jake Neighbours added to the Edmonton lead with just under five minutes left in the period as he used his backside to redirect in a Prokop shot from the right-circle.
The Oil Kings tacked on three more goals in the third period with both Ethan Peters and Tyler Horstmann jamming home rebounds in the opening five minutes of the period before Guenther put a bow on the night by stuffing home his fourth goal of the game and team leading 32nd of the season to finish the scoring barrage at 15:35 of the third period.
Sebastian Cossa earned his 24th win of the season making 16 saves while Maier and Ethan Chadwick combined for 39 saves in the losing cause. The Oil Kings went 0-for-six on the power play, the Blades were one-for-eight.
Next up, the Oil Kings host the Winnipeg ICE at 2:00 PM on Monday for Family Day Fireworks Frenzy.
