Grrrowl Take Big Step in Right Direction with 6-3 Win

March 1, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Grrrowl News Release

N. CHARLESTON, SC – The Greenville Grrrowl took a big step in the right direction with a 6-3 win over the second place South Carolina Stingrays in front of 5,886 at the North Charleston Coliseum Friday night. It was the first East Coast Hockey League victory for veteran goaltender DAMIAN RHODES.

The Grrrowl opened the scoring when MARTIN MASA intercepted a clearing attempt by Stingrays goaltender David Brumby, and fired a shot from the corner that was stopped. But CHRIS LYNCH was there to bury the rebound, and the Grrrowl led 1-0 at 7:39 of the first period. Curtis Huppe tied the game at 1-1 when he picked off a clearing pass from Greenville goaltender DAMAIAN RHODES at 9:21. And yet another giveaway led to Greenville's second goal when Matt Desrosiers tried to clear the zone and MATT DEMARSKI was there to steal it and feed MASA, who gave the Grrrowl a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.

The Grrrowl scored three straight second period goals, and led 5-1 after 40 minutes. KRZYZSTOF WIECKOWSKI made it 3-1 at 11:09 of the second period. LYNCH scored his second of the night and ninth goal in 17 games with the Grrrowl to make it 4-1 at 16:03. And with just :37 left in the second period, JOHN NAIL beat Brumby high, glove side to give the Grrrowl a 5-1 lead.

CHAD THEUER made it 6-1 with a goal in his first game since being acquired from Pensacola (ECHL) at the trade deadline this week. The Stingrays received late goals from Adam Calder (12:00) and Andy Powers (17:07), but the Grrrowl held on for the 6-3 win. DAMIAN RHODES recorded 23 saves for his first win this season, as Greenville outshot South Carolina 31-29.
