Quick Strikes Doom Bakersfield

March 1, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Kevin McNeill and Dean Larson scored 38 seconds apart midway through the third period as Anchorage turned a 4-3 deficit into a stunning 5-4 victory over Bakersfield before 4,791 Friday night at Sullivan Arena.

Yvan Corbin scored his league-leading 36th goal of the season to open the scoring only 1:04 into the game, but Jason Jackman and Jason Ralph provided the Condors with a 2-1 margin after the first period with goals at 5:42 and 12:29 of the first period. The game really opened up in the second period, with the teams combining for 28 shots. McNeill scored his first of two on the night (giving him a goal in seven of his last eight contests) to tie the game 2-2 at 5:29, but Guy Dupuis answered with a power play tally barely a minute later to push Bakersfield back in front. Carl Drakensjo rammed home a Dave Csumrik rebound with 1:28 left in the middle frame to knot the score 3-3 heading into the final period.

Corbin's cross-ice pass led to a 2-on-0 that Shawn Byram converted for a 4-3 Condor edge at 7:26 of the third period. The goal came with Anchorage on the power play, marking the 15th time (most in the WCHL) that the Aces had been burned for a shorthanded marker. But three minutes later, McNeill scored his second of the evening and Larson followed with his 25th of the year, and Anchorage had a 5-4 lead it would never relinquish. The Aces outshot the Condors 39-31, marking the first time all year that they had an outshot an opponent in an eventual victory (the previous three occasions had all been losses to Fresno). Kimbi Daniels finished with a playmaker—the last of his three assists coming on McNeill's third period equalizer.

Anchorage (15-40-3) has beaten Bakersfield eight times in 11 games this season, all by a single goal. The two teams collide tomorrow night at Sullivan, with the face-off once again scheduled for 7:00 p.m. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
