Stewart Scores Twice, Adds Assist As Jackals Roll 5-2 Over Beacons

March 1, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release

It seems the Elmira Jackals are picking the right time to peak. With the playoffs a month away, the Jackals stepped out of February in fine style, defeating the Port Huron Beacons 5-2 at the Coach USA Center to kick off a five game home stand.

Kris Mallette set the tone for the game just :30 in as he snapped a shot in from the right point, through traffic and over the left shoulder of Port Huron goalie Kory Cooper to make it 1-0. Eddy Lowe and Corey Neilson netted the assists on the opener. The Beacons came back at 11:24 when Bobby McKillop rang one in off the pipe past Marco Emond on his blocker side, and the game would go knotted at one through the first period of play.

Elmira owned the second period, scoring three goals while keeping the Beacons off the board. Glenn Stewart started things off at 6:57 from Randy Murphy, burying a shot through Cooper's five hole. Aaron Phillips added his 25th of the year with a power play marker from Stewart and Murphy at 10:32, and then Stewart notched his second of the night, and 26th of the year from Murphy and Phillips to put the Jackals up 4-1. Stewart took a loose puck on the right side, his off wing, and beat Cooper with an outstanding backhand with the puck on edge, nestling it just inside the far post.

For the final frame, Port Huron managed to breathe some life into their sticks when Derek Wood scored his fourth from Pete Bournazakis and John Vary at 1:39 of the period, making it 4-2. But the Jackals would quash all Beacon hopes when Mike Thompson potted a shorthanded marker, tapping home a rebound from an Eddy Lowe shot after Lowe stole the puck just inside the Beacon blue line. The goal was Thompson's 15th of the year, and made for a 5-2 final. Emond picked up his 27th victory of the year with 20 saves on 22 shots, while Cooper took the loss, stopping 31 of 36 shots.

Notes:

- Glenn Stewart extended his scoring streak to seven consecutive games with his three points Friday. Stewart has 7-6-13 over that stretch, and has now scored a goal in his last six consecutive home games. He has not had a night with less than two points over that stretch, collecting 10-6-16 in those games.

- Marco Emond picked up his UHL leading 27th win of the year on Friday, finishing the month of February 9-1-2 for the Jackals.

- Aaron Phillips (25) is just one goal behind Glenn Stewart (26) for the goal scoring lead on the Jackals. Phillips notched his 25th of the year on the power play as the Jackals went 1 for 4. The team has now scored a power play goal in each of their last seven games (9 for 27, 33.3%)

The Jackals continue their five game home stand tomorrow night against the Flint Generals, then face the Adirondack IceHawks in matinee action on Sunday. Tickets are still available for both games, and may be purchased through the Coach USA Center Box Office, all TicketMaster locations, on line at www.TicketMaster.com, or charge by phone at (607) 722-3711.
