Growlers Drop Series Finale to Chinooks
July 21, 2023 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Kalamazoo Growlers News Release
Mequon, WI - Despite a four-run ninth inning, the Kalamazoo Growlers dropped their series finale with the Lakeshore Chinooks 6-5.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The baseball gods seemed to favor the Chinooks all night long in game two of the series at Kapco Park. Joseph Spence brought home the first run of the ballgame, golfing a slider two inches above home plate into center field for an RBI single.
- The Growlers offense tripped over their own shoelaces repeatedly, leaving runners on base in six of their nine innings at the plate and hitting into two double plays. The lone spark for the Growlers offense in the early going was a no-doubt home run from Banks Tolley in the fourth inning. Tolley's seventh home of the season puts K-Zoo just one home run shy of matching their 2022 home run total of 34.
- The Chinooks would bring home five more runs in the fourth through sixth innings, getting around multiple defensive mistakes from the Growlers including three foul pop-ups dropped and a flare double into right which dropped between three K-Zoo defenders.
- Kalamazoo would finally find life offesnively in the ninth. Following a pair of walks and Gavin Lewis Jr infield single, Casen Taggart delivered his third triple of the season clearing the bases to make it a two-run game. Before Gabe Springer had a chance to bring him in, a wild pitch would bring it back within one. With the bases clear and one out, both Gabe Springer and Banks Tolley would be retired on full-count AB's to end the ballgame.
