Grotjohn's Heroics Power Walk-Off Win

Geneva, Illinois - Ryan Grotjohn belted his first career walk-off homer to power the Kane County Cougars (48-50, 13-16) to a 5-4 win in 10 innings over the South Bend Cubs (50-49, 16-14) on Sunday afternoon at Northwestern Medicine Field.

The Cougars tallied the first runs of the day in the second inning. Ryan Grotjohn collected an RBI single to make it 1-0. Jose Herrera's sacrifice fly made it a 2-0 Cougar advantage.

In the top of the third, South Bend evened the score. Clayton Daniel led off with a double. After Chris Singleton's sacrifice bunt moved Daniel to third, Jhoan Duran's throwing error scored Daniel from third to cut the Cougar lead 2-1. Miguel Amaya tied the game on an RBI groundout. The following inning, South Bend earned their first lead of the afternoon when Chris Singleton collected a sacrifice fly.

The Cougars responded by tying the game in the fifth inning. Jancarlos Cintron double to start the frame. He scored on Gabriel Maciel's RBI single, knotting the game at three runs apiece.

In extras, the South Bend Cubs loaded the bases with two outs. They scored on a wild pitch by Cougars' hurler Kyler Stout to make it 4-3 Cubs. In the bottom half, automatic base runner Yoel Yanqui moved to third base on a fly out by Yan Sanchez. With two away, Ryan Grotjohn was down to his final strike, but fought back to work a full count. He belted the 3-2 pitch over the right field fence to deliver the Cougars the walk off win.

Kyler Stout (1-2) earned his first win as a Cougar, tossing two innings of one-unearned run ball. Starter Jhoan Duran did not factor into the decision, allowing three runs in 4.2 innings. Cole Bartlett fired 3.1 shutout frames.

Brian Glowicki (1-5) took the loss. He gave up two runs in 1.2 innings of work. Starter Enrique De Los Rios concluded his day after three innings, allowing two runs. Yapson Gomez allowed a run in three frames. Garret Kelly tossed two shutout innings.
