Lake County Captains News Release

(Eastlake, OH) - One day after striking for 11 runs on 16 hits, the Lake County Captains (14-16, 43-57) were silenced by the Burlington Bees (8-20, 38-59). The Captains stranded seven men in scoring position in a 5-1 loss on Sunday at Classic Park.

The Bees opened the scoring in the first inning, thanks to a two-out rally. After starter Francisco Perez got the first two men on a fly out and a strikeout, he walked Orlando Martinez and surrendered a single to Kevin Williams. Spencer Griffin then delivered his first of four singles, driving in Martinez with the game's first run.

Lake County tied the score in the bottom of the first. After Gabriel Mejia led off with a double, Richard Palacios hit a bouncing ball to first that ate up Alexis Olmeda on an in-between hop. Palacios was credited with an infield single and Mejia moved to third with nobody out. Oscar Gonzalez then lifted a fly ball to right and Mejia tagged up from third to score the equalizing run.

Burlington re-gained the lead in the second inning. Harrison Wenson led off the frame and pulled a fly ball down the left field line that clanged off the foul pole for a solo homer. The long ball gave the Bees a 2-1 advantage.

Perez blanked Burlington over the next two innings, but the Bees added three more insurance runs against the Lake County bullpen. In the fifth, right-hander Luis Jimenez walked Leonardo Rivas to begin the inning and Torii Hunter reached on an infield single. Jimenez retired the next two men, but Griffin struck again with two outs. His single plated Rivas to push the Bees' lead to 3-1.

The game remained tight until the eighth when a big fly gave the Bees a comfortable cushion. Facing right-hander Riley Echols, Griffin led off with his fourth single in a 4-for-4 day. Julio Garcia came up next and hammered a two-run shot to right to give Burlington a 5-1 lead.

Lake County had its opportunities to score, but came up empty. The Captains' biggest threats came in the fifth and eighth innings. In the fifth, Jose Medina hit a two-out single and Mejia hit a grounder that clipped the glove of reliever Austin Krzeminski and ricocheted toward second base. Garcia cut over from shortstop and fielded the ball, but fired wildly to first. Medina moved to third and Mejia, who was credited with an infield single, went to second on the errant throw. Krzeminski, however, got Palacios to ground out and end the inning.

The Captains again put men on second and third in the eighth. This time facing Zack Kelly, Gonzalez singled with one out and Nolan Jones worked a walk. Jonathan Laureano then grounded out, moving the runners into scoring position, and Benson popped up to short to end the inning.

Krzeminski (3-4) picked up the win. The reliever tossed three shutout innings and surrendered just two hits. He struck out two and walked two.

Perez (7-7) took the loss. The lefty lasted four innings and allowed two runs on five hits. He struck out six and walked a pair.

The Captains and Bees have split the first two games of their three-game series and will play the rubber game on Monday night. First pitch at Classic Park is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
