Burlington Bees News Release

Eastlake, OH. - After the series finale against Fort Wayne was cancelled, the Burlington Bees (7-20,37-59) were back in action last night to start their series against the Lake County Captains (14-15,43-56). However, a big second inning was all the Captains need to take game one against the Bees 11-3. Gregori Vasquez (5-4) earned his fifth victory in his 16th start for the Captains after a really great game. Vasquez went six innings, allowed just one run on five hits, one walk, and struck out five. Jose Soriano (0-4) got dominated early on and only managed to go one and two thirds innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits, throwing three walks, and one strikeout.

Captains put a seven spot on the board in the second

Lake County already had the lead going into the second inning after Jose Vicente hit a double to left to score Richard Palacios, giving the Captains a 1-0 lead. Todd Isaacs led the second off with a single to center and got to second soon after stealing his 21st base of the season. Jose Medina reached on an infield single to put runners at the corners, and Medina stole second for his first stolen base of the season. Both runners ended up scoring after a single from Miguel Eladio to make the score 3-0 Captains. However, Eladio was thrown out trying to extend his single to a double.

Lake County quickly loaded the bases though after a walk from Gabriel Mejia, Palacios second single of the game, and another walk drawn by Jonathan Laureano. Nolan Jones gave the Captains a 4-0 lead on a sacrifice fly and Lake County got the bases loaded again after an infield single. Will Benson then opened the game wide open on a grand slam for his 15th homerun, giving Lake County a total of seven runs in the inning, and an 8-0 lead.

Captains go up by ten in the fifth

The Bees did get their first run of the evening in the top half of the fifth after a two out triple from Torii Hunter, making the score 8-1. Lake County quickly responded with a three run inning to keep the momentum all on their side. Medina led the fifth off with a single for the Captains, and Mejia drew his second walk to put runners on first and second. Palacios then got his third hit of the night and first RBI on a single to center, making the score 9-1. Laureano followed him up with an RBI single of his own for the Captains tenth run, and Jones sent his 12th double of the season to left field, giving the Captains an 11-1 lead.

Bees add two runs late

Although the Bees were well out of the game, they still managed to do some positive things late with a couple runs. Alexis Olmeda got a one out double in the top of the seventh for his second as a Bee and Leonardo Rivas drove him in on his fifth triple of the season to give the Bees their second run. Burlington added on more in the ninth after Spencer Griffin led the inning off with a triple and Julio Garcia was the one who drove him in on a single to center. However, the early deficit was too much to overcome, as the Bees fell 11-3.

Bees big three keep Captains in check

Although the Bees had bad games on the mound from Soriano and James Ziemba, they still got great production from their three relievers Eduardo Del Rosario, Andrew Wantz, and Austin Warren. The three each pitched on shut out inning, and Wantz allowed the only hits with two, and Del Rosario did allow one walk, but threw three strikeouts. The two 2018 draft picks by the Angels continue to look impressive on the mound for the Bees and will be key assets in the bullpen for the rest of the season.

Everything goes right for Lake County

It can be difficult to beat any team when they have an offensive night like Lake County had last night. The lineup combined for 16 hits and drew six walks and went 10-16 with runners in scoring position. They finished with three doubles, a triple, and a homerun while stealing four bases. The nine hitter Eladio was the leader in the game, going 3-4 with two RBI's. Lake County also had Palacios and Medina finish with three hits. Benson finished with the most RBI's with four thanks to his grand slam in the second inning. Mejia was the only player not to have a hit in the game for Lake County, but he still got on with two walks and scored twice.

Looking Ahead

The Bees will look to have better success early on, as they will be back in action against Lake County tomorrow afternoon at 3pm. The Bees have not yet announced a starting pitcher, but the Captains are expected to start Francisco Perez. Perez has had a pretty solid season this year, going 7-6 in 17 starts while posting a 4.05 ERA.
