Solid All Around Pitching Leads to 5-1 Victory over the Captains

Burlington Bees News Release

Eastlake, OH. - It was a huge improvement for the Burlington Bees (8-20,38-59) in last night's game against the Lake County Captains (14-16,43-57). After getting blown out in the opener, the Bees bounced back and won last night's game 5-1. Austin Krzeminski (3-4) earned his third victory after shutting out the Captains in three innings, allowing just two hits, two walks, and striking out two. Francisco Perez (7-7) dropped down to an even .500 after taking his seventh loss of the season. Perez went four innings in his start, allowed two runs on five hits, walked two, but did strikeout six.

Griffin puts Bees up before Captains even the score

Perez quickly took care of the first two batters of the game for the Bees, but Orlando Martinez managed to draw a two out walk and Kevin Williams Jr put him in scoring position on a single to left. That allowed Spencer Griffin to drive in the first run of the game on a single to center, giving the Bees an early 1-0 lead.

Lake County didn't take long to retaliate thanks to a leadoff double from Gabriel Mejia and an infield single from Richard Palacios to put runners at the corners. Oscar Gonzalez then drove in Mejia on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.

Wenson gets the Bees in the lead in the second

The Captains didn't keep the Bees in check very long, because Harrison Wenson led the second inning off with his sixth homerun of the season, putting the Bees back ahead at 2-1.

Griffin drives in run number two

The score remained 2-1 until the Bees finally got something going in the top of the fifth. Leonardo Rivas led the inning off by drawing a four pitch walk and he quickly got into scoring position after a single from Torii Hunter. After Martinez and Williams Jr failed to reach safely, Griffin came up big again with two outs and delivered a single to center, scoring Rivas and giving Burlington a 3-1 lead.

Garcia puts game away in the eighth

After Griffin led the eighth inning off with his fourth hit of the ball game, Julio Garcia put the Bees up 5-1 on a two run shot to right for his fifth homerun of the season, and the two RBI's bring his season total up to 40. Lake County would get a couple baserunners in the final two innings, but couldn't manage a rally, giving the Bees a 5-1 win.

Brady has best start of the season

It had been a rough couple games for Bees starter Denny Brady, but he looked pretty solid in his start last night. Brady went four innings, allowed just one run on four hits and struck out two. Four innings is the longest Brady has appeared in a game and this is the second start in a row where he didn't allow a walk. Although Brady hasn't earned a win yet this season, he is starting to show a lot of improvements on the mound.

Zack Kelly has shined in his fourth appearance for Burlington, pitching two shutout innings, allowing two hits, one walk, and striking out one. Kelly has allowed just one run in ten innings for the Bees, positing an impressive .90 ERA while striking out 12 hitters.

Olmeda looking like a very valuable player

Alexis Olmeda has only appeared in five games for the Bees this season but has made quite an impact on the team. Olmeda has six hits in 17 at bats, which has him hitting .353. He has driven in five runs, hit two double, and has hit a homerun. He played his first game at first for the Bees last night, and could be seeing more time there, since Wenson is a defensive catcher. If Olmeda can show he can do well at first, he could become a regular starter. It will be tough though, considering Connor Fitzsimons has shown he can play the position too.

Looking Ahead

The Bees will play the final game of their homestand tomorrow night at six pm, as they will look to take two out of three games against Lake County. The Bees have not announced a starter for tomorrow's game, but Lake County is expected to start Jean Carlos Mejia. Mejia has started eight games for the Captains this season, he has won two and lost four. His earned run average is at a solid 3.42, and has thrown 47 strikeouts in 47.1 innings pitched, while only allowing 12 walks. The Bees will enjoy an off day on Tuesday, before starting a seven game homestand against the Quad Cities River Bandits.
